Mastering stereo vs stems

Hi Jens, thank you for this!
I wanted to know - Would you generally prefer mastering using stems or would you prefer using a stereo wav file? Of course, there are a lot more things that can be done using stems but I feel like it might make the process difficult at times exactly for that reason. What are your thoughts on this subject?

Hi Aaron, I prefer mastering a stereo file if it's just about my own well-being. :-)

Also, if the mix is good enough, I recommend it. However, if there are issues with the mix, stereo stems of instrument groups can be a great way to help that. Since I do so much mixing, working with stems comes very naturally for me too. I know many mastering engineers who loath stems.
