Testing gear for manufacture / is there really an insanity clause?

How on earth do you keep perspective / keep from going insane when putting gear through trial periods?

What are some of the favorite test audio signals?

Raw overdub tracks? Pre recorded CDS?

Mixerman says if he were to Autotune sh!t for days he would go insane, I dont think I could hack it swapping out resistors for very long..

Have you ever been arrested?

Tell us all about it. Post up mug shots.. etc.

Howdy Jules and thank you for the extreme honour of being this month's co-guest bozo.

Testing gear... well the daily duties are done by my QC crew. Any unsolicited CDs that people send to me because they think I might be slightly interested in listening to them instead of what I would rather be listening to get thrown over to my QC boyz and if they happen to like the CD they might play it when running through the gear (when they ain't running sine waves or square waves to play on a 'scope). Or sometimes the QC guys steal my CDs. Actually quite often they do. I fail to understand how they can critically evaluate any of our gear using my Los Del Rio Macarena or ABBA's Greatest hits CD though...

When I am checking out gear in a critical listening session I'll usually put on a few good sounding things I like and I know well such as Rage Against the Machine... I think I would go insane if I had to listen to raw tracks all day like you recording guys do.

To keep from going insane, I listen to tunes I like for the pleasure of music most of the day while I am working and I try hard not to care how good or bad they were recorded and I also try hard to not care if anyone else thinks I am insane if I like Donny and Marie's "Deep Purple" which just popped up on the 70's music channel on my DirecTV.

I haven't been arrested yet but I am working on it.

So folks, what silly pop tune will you admit here to secretly liking even though it might risk you being hauled off to the Insane Asylum by the "Cool Police"?

Hmmm "Copacabana" is playing now.... "His name was Rico. He wore a diamond...."

Murray Head "One Night In Bangkok"

Is that un-cool enough or do I half to go lower to really get the Cool Police pissed off?

** get the intern from Full Sail to read the manual, and I . . . . ACT interested when he tries to show me all of the wonderful things this piece of gear will do . . . . as he tries HARD to get points by showing how much he learned by studying the manual all weekend?

What are some of the favorite test audio signals?

** Smoke?

Raw overdub tracks? Pre recorded CDS?

** Both . . but I got to tell you Jules . . . I haven't heard anything in so damn long that excites me to use as a commercial reference cd . . it's pitiful.

Mixerman says if he were to Autotune sh!t for days he would go insane, I dont think I could hack it swapping out resistors for very long..

** I wouldn't AutoTune ****! So you got the wrong guy here for that question. I had some producer here once . . . that "tracked" vocals through his hardware AutoTune box. We started out going into a $5000 mic, into a $2500 pre, tapping it with a $1500 compressor . . to run it through a $400 AutoTune box . . . to make it (vocal) sound like a $85 dollar Shure SM58!! That's bull****!

Have you ever been arrested?

** Uh . . . yea. A few . . . . er, couple of times.
Lately, for choking people that AutoTune vocals and copy and paste one chorus in all the choruses.

Tell us all about it. Post up mug shots.. etc.

** er . . . .I don't think so. Not unless I get paid.

Hmph...I just scoured the Curve Labs CD collection, and the closest thing I could find was Sinatra's "Come Fly With Me." I dunno, Billy May's orchestra is hard to f&ck with.

What about the Bee Gees? Saturday Night Fever? Will that get me busted? Dag, that's the shizzo...Night fever, night fever... ahhh, disco.

Whatever happened to disco? Disco was the shizzo.

Blah. The cool poe-poe can suckle the teet of a dead decaying donkey. N sync's "pop" comes to mind. Very "stock" sounds, but very respectable production. "Gone" as well.

I try the **** in a lot of applications, if possible before sessions, in our warehouse, and then on sessions... demo sessions where we I can **** around a bit... sometimes "product sessions" where the artist and or producer is cool with me ****ing around a bit. Sometimes it's such a cut and dried piece [like a mic-pre] that a whole lot of ****ing around with it isn't really needed... obviously, I'll mess with different gain staging strategies, but that's not something I'll be asking for permission to take time doing... that part and parcel to getting any sound.

It usually takes me a good couple of weeks of really putting something through it's paces before I really get a handle on whether I love it, or hate it.

There has been some equipment I've tried over the years that I thought was pretty cool at the start of a project, and by the time the damn thing got to the mix phase I started to wonder just what the **** I was thinking of when I thought I liked this piece of ****. It takes me a while to come to a conclusion on a lot of this stuff...

Good bands with a great attitude. I have the obligatory CD with the individual tracks from a song I did broken down one at a time and with various submixes for the first "initial" check out of something... but it ain't like the real thing. It's kinda like spankin' the monkey to a porno film... you're not really participating in any meaningful way... but you might get an idea or two of how you might want to try the equipment when you get into a "real" situation. "Track breakdown CD's" are a really good starting point in my world, but there is definitely no substitue for evaluating tools on real sessions in the "real world".

Uhhhh, guess I kinda answered that... I will definitely add that damn near anything out of the box will be "bench compared" with **** I already know I like... not so much in a "competative" manner, but to try to get a feel for what the unit I'm evaluating is capable of doing, and where it might best shine.

Sometimes that happens with a pre-recorded CD [whatever is on in the shop at the moment... our shop has like 2 dozen "+4 drops" from an inherited Troisi distribution amp that spreads the CD's that serve as our "music on hold"... Don the shipping MGR. is in charge of the music... so it could be anything from Billy Holiday to the Sex Pistols... he has most wonderfully eclectic taste!!] other times it's a voice trial, sometimes it's all of the above... but unless someone is breathing down my throat for an opinion on a unit, that is never the definitive test.

Mixerman says if he were to Autotune sh!t for days he would go insane, I dont think I could hack it swapping out resistors for very long...
fuuck I totally agree with MM... I'd go so far to say that if I had a gig that required autotuning for days... I wouldn't have a gig.

As for the design/alpha/beta testing thing... that gig is waaaay more than "swapping out resistors", it's more like wholesale transformer changes, tube changes, how the tube is run changes, etc.

I know in the units with which I've been involved, from the Empirical Labs EL-8 to the 1969 to MP-2NV to the DRS-2 and a half a dozen others I can't think of at the moment... my role has been different in all of them. Obviously, seeing as I barely understand which is the business end of a soldering iron, "component level" changes are way over my head.

Usually I'm just a quasi-articulate additional set of ears, sometimes I get involved with the ergonomics of the unit... but more often the overall tone.

Sometimes it's not so much what I want to hear out of the unit on the first pass... but what kind of trouble am I going to run into if I use this thing on like 40 tracks of information... how bad will the 'buildup' **** me, or will I be able to slide through without too much of a 'signature' [also spelled "**** that will get in my way in the quest to present the presentation I have envisioned for this project] from any one specific unit.... **** like that.

I thought I had the gig, I mean the $750 USD check cleared and everything [you didn't bull**** me did you, that is what you told me you paid Charles, I hope you're not stiffing me on the going rate here]... I mean, this is getting pretty close to a ****ing job application kind of thing... buuuuuuut... to anwer the question...

Yes.

Quote:
Tell us all about it.
Well, that's really nobody's ****ing business... maybe over a beer or two sometime, but not in a public forum... I've worked really hard and spent a bunch of money to get a lot of that **** sealed... how 'bout we let it stay that way. Leave it at I'm not on parole, probation, nor do I have charges pending. My passport is valid and I can go anywhere I please, when I please [except Cuba, Libya, and N. Korea... and probably Iraq but I haven't looked at the US travel prohibitions lately].

Freedom's just another word for something you didn't get caught for yet.

Good enough for ya?

** Lot's of A/B'ing over a few weeks or months. Usually I just plug it in and go for it. If it ain't working I switch to something else and keep working.

What are some of the favorite test audio signals?

Raw overdub tracks? Pre recorded CDS?

** Could be either, could be the project I'm working on at the time. Depends on what the calander says that day.

Mixerman says if he were to Autotune sh!t for days he would go insane,

** So would I. I only use it when I have to, usually because the ****s already on tape and rerecording is impossible.

Have you ever been arrested?

** Nope.

That does it Jules. I'm re-negotiating my contract. You'll be hearing from my lawyer Monday morning.

You are ALL in violation of your NDA's. As you were warned in the small print, the microchip embedded in your brains at the Gearslutz center for the audio toy dependant, will now be triggered to make you walk into Guitar Center and ask questions about - Mackie gear.

HAPPY SHOPPING!

Hmmm... does anyone remember the Twinkie clause? Seriously. A few years ago (maybe 6?) some chucklehead ate a few boxes of Twinkies and went off the deep end, killed about a dozen people IIRC. His lawyer got him out of the deep dog **** and he only did a few years or life in an asylum. The plea? Temporary insanity, because he ate too many Twinkies and was on a sugar high. How ****ed up is that?

"The 'Twinkie Defense' came about during the trial of former city supervisor San Fransisco Dan White for the murders of San Fransisco mayor George Moscone and San Francisco city supervisor (i.e city councilman) Harvey Milk. As part of his defence a psychologist testified that White's addiction to junk food could be a symptom of diminished capacity; however in popular lore it became said that his defense was that Twinkies made him do it."
