Mix review?

Question in regards to playing mixes for clients.
A) Do you send mixes to clients to review and they send notes for rounds of revisions or B) Do you use some sort of online mix streaming platform to play mixes for clients in real time to review? Also wondering if there is any sort of distortion on vocals to have them cut through the mix And pump. Your vocal tracks always sound exciting with movement.

Thanks for doing the Q&A. Big fan of you and Serban’s work.

Yes, lots of back and forth notes and revisions. We'll keep working on the revisions as long as they have notes. Sometimes it gets to the point where we say it is going in the wrong direction and enough is enough.

Yes, using streaming for real-time review. We're actually using a product that is obsolete and no longer supported for this, so no sense in me naming it I think. It is preventing us from upgrading the OS on the computer that is running it, so we'll be looking for another solution.

Mostly nothing specifically on the vocals for a bit of distortion or grit; the Waves CLA-76 can add a bit, overall Mix Buss chain decisions can add a bit. Sometimes if distortion is specifically called for Lo-Fi is great for that.

Thank you again for all your answers. https://audiomovers.com/ might be a good modern solution for streaming.

I know, I just have a aversion to subscription software! Can't avoid it these days though.

John,

Thanks for all of the information. You might check out Microsoft teams for online streaming your mixes. The newer version is pretty slick and works seamlessly with the HDX system. Much better than older iTunes streaming. Cheers keep up the good work.

a good free option with a decent set of collaboration tools and privacy settings.. I've been using it for over a year without a single issue: https://fidbak.audio/

Nice!

Can you please elaborate on how you set it up?

thanks, another for the list to check out.

My most important qualification for this is security. We can't just broadcast a mix that is in progress to anyone with the link; need to be able to control who is listening at all times.

Yeah, this may or may not fit your needs, but I've been using it in private mode strictly for collaboration notes and demo purposes and it runs flawlessly.

btw the site was created by and owned by a mix/master studio in france that has multiple gold, platinum and diamond record certifications (https://masterplusonline.com/en/engineer), so they get it where keeping things private and locked down are concerned. I have no affiliation with them... just sharing
