I was at Charles Dye Web site today and read an amazing quote.

"In the studios that I work at there are no patch cables, no patchbays, and no huge racks of outboard gear. "

Really? No patchbays? But you still have preamps, compressors and other outboard stuff for tracking, right? How is that organized?

Just curious.

That was in reference to many of the clients I work for in Miami that have "all Pro Tools" mixing studios (they're very popular here). They do have tiny patchbays for for 2-track interfacing (CD, DAT, etc.), but that's it.

When it comes to mixing I pop the drives in the rack, go to work with PT + plugs, print the mix back to the PT hard disk, + burn a CD from the desktop of the 24 bit mixes to deliver to mastering. All without leaving the computer, and no patch cables or bays needed.

Of course tracking is a different story, that's done as it always has been.
