HD3 questions (I'm gonna break down and get it)

I've decided to go with the future (HD3) instead of getting several mix cards.
Should I wait to go OSX?
What is the status of direct connect in HD and OSX?
What reverbs are gonna still be around besides Reverb One?
What are the drawbacks of this decision?? All you guys who say HD sounds better at 44.1 please chime in. I have to run SSC so direct connect is a must. My computer is a G4 466 and the plugs I plan to get are

Waves Bundle
MCDsp Everything
DUY Global bundle
Wave Mechanics Sound Blender
Digi DPP-1, Sound Replacer
Sony EQ
Serato Scratch
Bomb Factory Pultec,Fairchild and moog bundle

Is there anything else that I need? (I have plenty that I dont use in mix and I want to save money by getting only the necessities in HD)

Can I hold off on getting a cranesong HEDD? Do you think the plugin will be up to par when it comes out???

I'm thinking more nodes more dsp why not go HD instead of buying converters and Mix farms since I only have a mix core and Adat Bridge 24.

Does this make sense?? Will I miss plates from lexiverb??? (Guess I could get a PCM91 and 81)

Must confess I'm still on the fence a bit. If I stay in the MIX system world I will have to buy a Cranesong Hedd, 4-5 mix farms and an expansion chassis. Along with the sony eq? (maybe). I can get by with tracking 2 channels at a time so this is not a problem. And If I should go to HD later in life, I will simply keep my mix as a 2nd system (It still performs). What should I do?

Please note the thought of future expansion is not really an issue because If I crank out a hit record I can get whatever I choose. I'm just trying to buy wisely without becoming too much of a gear slut. I'm beginning to feel I'd rather have a Hummer H2 instead of more outboard gearyuktyy

So guys what do u think?

Remember this is an investment not an addiction

Guys sorry I keep thinking of additional info that I should have put in the first post.

My main question about HD involves depth/dimension in mixes. Allow me to give a little of my history. My studio started with a mackie board and Adats. I hated the sound! Eventually a moved to an O2r. This was an improvement but no cigar. Then I moved to a Mix core card. Mixes were alot better and closeer to my goal, However I didn't have enough processing to use ffx to place instruments in spaces I would in a bigger studio.

Is my lack of satisfaction due to a lack of processing power? Or,
Is it that the mix 24 is more 2 dimensional than what I'm after
Will this be solved by going to HD???

What kinda music are you doing primarily?

I'm on the same fence but I think our needs are quite a bit differtent maybe.

As of yesterday I was falling on the HD side of the fence...but the DIGI guys are arranging a shootout in our room (they'll bring in a rig) and i'm hoping for that to be the decision maker for us.

The HD rig would preclude us buying some much needed outboard (not happy with plugs only) .....

Your in the right place at present (having a mix and ADAT bridge) to make the upgrade and not feel the hit (asuming your staying at 48k) as hard as folks that are heavily invested in "sonic upgrades" ie: HEDD,apoggee, etc.

Welcome to the quandry, may we all be happy and productive with our decisions.

buy HD!!!

I"m saying this from

-sound quality (mostly due to the converters)
-processing power (especially if running 44.1, 48)
-version/plugin upgrades (as some plugins are starting to not update mix platform
-will hold value an additional 3 years over mix
-96k will become a standard at some point
-client attractiveness
-promo plugin pack
-used mix cards haven't really dropped in price yet like they sure are going to do...
-48 bit dithering at the mix bus
-can still sell your mix system (if you don't trade in) for a descent amount
-will have brand new Digi support for a year
-won't have to make an significant upgrade in one or two years
-won't have to buy chasis yet

As far as sound quality...It sure makes a difference...I think you'll be able to get to your goals a bit quicker than with a mix, especially if you do "mix in the box"
It shouldn't be a question...this is as good of a time for you to do it as it's going to get...

I was in the same kind of dilemma 6 months ago. (It was actually worst since almost no plugins were available at that time.)

I exchanged my Mix3 for an HD3 and am VERY happy I did so. (Especially since I could take advantage of the original bonus exchange policy!)

I only had an ADAT Bridge/24 (with Lucid 8824 converters) with my Mix3. So I got one 192 i/o and kept my ADAT Bridge to put in its Legacy port for 32 channels into the computer. (8x analog from the 192 + 8x AES for my outboard reverbs + 16x analog from the Lucid/ADAT Bridge combo.)

I needed more i/o's and more DSP power anyway at that point. So the way I figured it, it cost me less to upgrade to HD than to buy an expansion chassis + 3 Mix Farms + whatever high end 8 channels converter I would have chosen + PT interface. (Which I would have needed to roughly equal what I now have.)

Yes HD sounds better at 44.1 (mixing buss) than my old Mix system even when recording and playing back thru the Lucids. Yes the 192 sounds quite good and is a pretty good value considering the sound quality and connectivity options. The funny thing is, even though I now have more DSP I actually use less plugins because the mixes gel together easier and in a nicer way.

Also of interest (even if only to your accountant!), my system is probably gonna be fully amortized by the time the next PT incarnation comes out in 3-4 years since I updated early.

Hope that might be useful to you guys...

I am going to hold off a little while longer for these odd reasons.

Amongst my 2 PT rigs there are:

16 x channels of zillion dollar Prism Dream ADA converters
1 x Apogee AD8000SE

The 2nd remote Pt rig (including the Apogee SE) is still doing well as hire items.

I dont think I could afford to have an HD rig in the studio AND a HD hire rig (ie to upgrade BOTH rigs)

With the Sony plug ins, external summing and a kicking vintage / classic outboard collection - I feel I can hang out untill 96k rock n roll recording really takes off and by then my desired PT 'feature set' (including auto delay compensation) might be in place.

I would get HD in a flash if the above issues were not already present.
