Spatializer plug

How does the spatializer ptools plug work?
Does the spatializer plug move sounds forward/backward as well as beyond the left and right speakers? Is it just like the old spatializer with the joysticks??

I have a spatializer retro (their cheaper rack mount version with no joysticks). It moves things beyond the left and right speakers and widens things a bit. Once I upgrade my AD converter to a HEDD 192, I could leave the Spatializer retro inserted via my TC finalizer. Or I could use the plugin version and buy a DSP farm to run it. Which do you guys reccomend?

Which other plugs would run off the DSP farm?? There's 4 chips there right??
Does Lexiverb/TC verbn chorus/ or any of the other ffx plugs run on DSP farms???

The Spatializer plug in for ProTools (Note that it only works on "old" DSP Farms) is exactly the same as the Retro. No joysticks like the 8 model.

At the time I was corresponding with Spatializer about doing a plug based on the Spatializer 8 and they said it was in the works, i even saw a screen shot they sent me, however Spatializer have now stopped plug in's and seem to be concentrating on OEM algorithms etc for computers.

A damn shame

I highly recommend NOT using a spaitalizer on your stereo bus. Use mix buses with elements you want wider, but I don't recomend it on everything. I always felt like I was loosing my middle (even if I turned up the center on my Retro). That being said, I suggest a VIntage farm and the plug in. You can use several to get different degrees of space on different instruments.

Thanks for the tips guys. Ecue I agree I'd never put the spatializer on an entire mix, just on things I want wider and Reverb returns

I think I'm gonna move to an HD3 or HD4 so the retro will be my only option.
I figure since I only have a small investement in ptools mix, now would be a good time to go HD.

Though I have to admit the HD step will hurt in the pocket, it seems to make more sense than adding 5 mix farms

Ecue were you saying that the Plugin retained more of the center info than the Retro? I ask because I may be stuck using the Retro if I go HD. would blending mono info with the Retro signal be like turning up the center slider on the plugin? ( I never used the plug in because I dont have a DSP farm yet).

I use 3 different Spatializers in my mixes(Desper,Behringer and the Neve 33608). They all affect the frequencies in different ways:Desper for lows/mids,Behringer for the highs and Neve 33608 on everything else in between.

Of the (3) the Neve retains the center the best( go figure!!!) It works great on a drum buss as well as a background vocal buss. It definetely imparts its own character though(Neve like).

I do agree with not using on it everything(stereo mix). If you are looking for a wider mix spectrum than that's probably for another topic.

Hey Thrillfactor, what model Berhinger do you use, the Edison? I played with one some time ago and it was useful on some stuff. I must admit to never having heard about the Neve one... Is it an M-S unit encoding/decoding unit? Just curious.

Hi GroundControl,

Yes it is the Edison. Its probably the best thing they designed(even though the XLR jacks on mine went recently).

It is great on percussion and cetain synths(anything you need highs on.) Sometimes I just run a background vocal buss through it(no processing) just for the coloration it gives the sound.

Yes the Neve 33608 is an M-S unit found on certain broadcast consoles(this is one of my secret weapons.sigh. I guess its not a secret anymore). It was the precursor to a alot of the spatializers made today. It works great on drums and background vocals. It has a certain coloration that just works and it keeps it center image pretty solid(hey its a Neve!!! Of course it must!!).
