Square Audio - new company, new product

SQUARE AUDIO
www.square.audio

Square Audio was founded in 2012 in Riga, Latvia to research, develop and manufacture non-conventional professional acoustic systems. Prior to the joining forces and creating own company, co-founders Viesturs Balodis (31) and Rolands Janevics (54) were involved in several audio industry related activities such as high end, home audio, car audio and professional acoustic systems design and building as well high end studio microphones, innovative measurement technologies and high end home audio systems promotion to the global market. After many years involved with the various audio related activities co-founders decided to devote all that gathered experience and knowledge to research, create and promote the products that are ones of the highest importance in music recording process. The first product created by the company by the end of 2014 is the active two-way reference grade studio monitors called Square One.

SQUARE ONE

The Square One acoustic system concept is a combination of the two audio worlds – the audiophile and the professional – both highest grade professional and audiophile components are used in the Square One and supplied by well-known and respected European manufacturers such as Scanspeak (Denmark), Eighteensound (Italy) and Hypex Electronics (Netherlands).
Prior to more detailed information there should be pointed out four basic building blocks of the Square One acoustic system design in following order:
• Enclosure
• Low frequency components
• High frequency components
• Electronics

ENCLOSURE AND ACOUSTIC FORMATION

There have been several hundreds of components and acoustic constructions of all kinds tested for the past 20 years by the Square Audio CTO Rolands Janevics in such fields as professional, audiophile, home and car audio. The gathered experience from all these audio industry segments eventually set a direction to follow, resulting in a non-conventional approach in acoustic design for Square One studio monitor system.

The first and the foremost before component selection is the concept of acoustic formation in general which basically is the design concept of the loudspeaker enclosure. The loudspeaker enclosure is like a skeleton that holds together the whole body. Like a skeleton holding everything together and giving a body a certain appearance, the enclosure holds together transducers, electronics and gives the loudspeaker a shape that is dependent from the performance goals set prior to the creation of the loudspeaker.

The Square One is an active horn loaded two way bass reflex acoustic system with non-conventional approach in how the low frequencies are produced and more. Although there are many who prefer the sealed box design, we prefer the bass reflex because of the variations and detail it can deliver and the way how we control the low frequency (LF) driver behavior in Square One. The LF performance in Square One is based on resonators and the port. There are two resonators and the horn loaded high frequency (HF) driver in between them for Square One monitor. Each resonator is loaded with two woofers and serves the following tasks:
• The resonator improves the linearity of the excursion and maximizes the efficiency of the LF drivers
• The resonators produce acoustic load on LF drivers that ensure less compression and distortions on the LF drivers because the pressure inside the enclosure and in resonator is equalized
• The resonators function as an acoustic crossover which helps to minimize band overlap effects

In addition to the non-conventional resonance design for LF the port is low Q and clean with less distortions possible.

For the high frequencies in Square One we have preferred the horn loaded compression driver formation for following tasks:
• The horn is a constant directivity and by controlling directivity we deliver much more energy to the desired area in the room instead of spreading it out to irrelevant areas. In the studio environment it is important to hear more direct sound than reflected to make a proper editing of the sound sources
• The compression driver more efficient and is capable to deliver unmatched SPL. While the SPL is important to properly perceive the sound source character, higher efficiency needs less amplification and obviously leads to less distortions introduced by the amplifier.
• The compression driver is very durable and hard to kill even with extreme peaks introduced by accident
• The power compression of the compression driver is very low and it allows to work long hours with less distortion and with performance unaffected by long periods of usage

The design of the enclosure is made in a way where no damping material is necessary. We prefer no damping material inside because system should oscillate freely and instantly releasing the energy out of the box instead of storing the energy inside. The enclosure is made without parallel surfaces inside the box to minimize the resonances and vibrations introduced by them and therefore allowing use of no damping material.

The last but not the least about the enclosure and acoustic formation is the symmetry of the driver placement. By the design of the enclosure we are able to maximally approximate the acoustic axis of the drivers. Therefore we can refer the radiation of the sound waves from Square One to a “point source” type radiation in away. The “point source” radiation ensure the precise radiation of the sound sources and introduces way less problems in both horizontal and vertical off-axis, ensuring the very smooth power response, even sound spectrum radiation in the room and also the listening position is much wider both horizontal and vertical.

COMPONENTS

For the HF we use compression drivers and horns manufactured in Italy by the Eighteensound which is a very well respected company globally and creates the highest quality products on the market with own innovations generated by their advanced development and manufacturing technologies. The compression driver diaphragm assembly used in Square One is composed by an aluminum dome sandwiched to a proprietary treated PEN (polyethylene naftalate) suspension. The composite diaphragm assembly is made by an aluminum dome strongly joined to the PEN suspension, in order to assure unmatched transient response. The lower density of the aluminum and PEN structure permits higher levels of sensitivity, especially in the mid-high frequency range. Excellent heat dissipation and thermal exchange is guaranteed by the direct contact between the magnetic structure and the aluminum cover that allows a lower power compression value to be obtained. The HF driver allows the in average of 110dB (1W/1m) sensitivity and 80W of AES power to be achieved. The horn used in the Square One monitors is a constant coverage horn that is made from aluminum construction for excellent heat transfer, gives uniform on-axis and off-axis frequency response, 60° x 40° or 90° x 40° horizontal and vertical constant coverage and has a very low distortion at high sound pressure.

For the LF we use a combination of 4 x 5.25” sandwich paper cone drivers for each loudspeaker to match with the HF compression driver. These drivers are made by one of the most respected and well known audiophile component manufacturer from Denmark – Scanspeak. The woofers we use have powerful neodymium motors with under-hung voice coil configuration. They provide large linear excursion capability of +/-9mm. and the extensive use of their SD (symmetric drive) copper caps ensures the lowest possible distortion throughout the excursion range of the speaker. Their patent-pending motor technology offers a very long linear excursion, along with a very high force factor. The top plate is shaped to guide the backside airflow around the motor. Finally, the open cast aluminum chassis design of the driver is virtually free from compression. The stiff and robust cone handles high power with ease. This assures that details transferred through the motor system are converted into undistorted sound. Transparency, details and precision at any input power are key words when describing the sound quality of the Illuminator designs. By using the very specific drivers from Scanspeak we can achieve more power and clarity with in a relatively smaller enclosure which allows the Square One to be used in wider variety recoding spaces and suggested monitoring distances are ranging from 1m up to 4m making the Square One both nearfield and midfield monitor, as a main or secondary purpose.

To amplify and process the signal, the Square One monitor system we use audiophile grade DSP based class D amplification made by one of the most advanced companies in their field – Hypex Electronics from Netherlands. For the amplification the 400 W LF and 200 W HF (reduced gain) UcD amplifiers are used that deliver high performance in terms of flat, fully load-independent frequency response, low output impedance, very low frequency independent THD and a very low noise parameters. The DSP used in Square One has a balanced analogue input, balanced analogue through, AES 3 digital input and AES through and 3 custom equalization presets are available for any preferences of the customer.

I remember reading about Hypex years ago, namely the Ncore modules.. quite revolutionary.

Was even thinking about making my own amps for my wilmslow monitors.
