Hardware NAMM: Aphex USB 500 Rack

The USB 500 Rack bridges the gap between the traditionally analog 500 Series workflows and modern DAW workflows by providing a solution for the customer to use 500 Series modules directly with their DAW. Use your favorite mic preamps as inputs directly to your DAW or use your favorite analog compressors & EQs as hardware inserts in your DAW. All while monitoring though the pristine monitor section of the USB 500 Rack, that includes Mono and Dim functions along with two high performance, independent headphone amplifiers.

For even more flexibility, modules can be chained in the analog domain for channel strip operation or linked for stereo compression (see your modules’ linking documentation).

The USB 500 Rack also provides balanced XLR connections for use as a standard analog 500 series rack.

Yes Sir, if their converters are high quality, this product could be one of the products to buy, very attractive indeed.

It seems Aphex put a lot of affort into innovation, that´s very important, now, we want to know thier sound quality.

Its a real surprise.

of course - theres nothing to stop people patching in a normal lunchbox into thier current interface to use as inserts...but having an all in one design is cool...so long as the converters are decent...

I saw this, and saw whom it was by. I was like, "YES! I'll finally get a lunchbox!" I then looked at the price, and was like, "NOPE! I'm not going to get a lunchbox, yet!"

Pretty cool as long as the converters ae good I'd consider snagging one.

Also I bet the street price is lower than $949.

MSRP doesn't usually = street.

thats pretty cool they added MIDI and that modules can be put in series - I wonder how that is - hardwired or patched...chuck in a few lindell / warm audio or GAP modules as youve got a pretty nice low cost front end...

Im being greedy but I kind of wishe they did a 6 slot...2 pre, 2 eq, 2 comps...

That's true, but I almost see this aimed for someone mixing from a laptop more than in a studio. I can see someone sitting at their kitchen table with a laptop and this and just a USB cable, able to insert hardware like plugins with no other interfaces / xlr cables needed.

Of course I would find a 6 or 8 space to be infinitely more functional but maybe they're testing the water with this first.

Very cool that they included XLR ins and outs so when you bring the lunchbox down to your studio, you can patch it in with your conversion there.

Looking forward to hearing more about this.

Regards,
Frank

Not to argue sir, but considerring that a Duet 2 plus a Radial Cube retails for around $950, a $949 list is pretty reasonable for what you get.

The question is how do the converters stack up against, say, a Duet 2.

Guys,
Jace from Aphex here.
I'll post some info about the converters when we get back from NAMM.
All I can tell you for the moment is that they are 24/96 AKM.
By the way, we won Best In Show from Pro Sound for the USB 500 Rack!

Here's a video I did with Sound On Sound to describe the product.

Yes, you can chain any of the 4 modules together.
Not only that, but when chain 4 modules together XLR inputs 2&3 can be used as line inputs to the DAW to record 2 external mic pres at the same time!

You just set the switch to CHAIN on the rear panel per module.

Hi Jace. Can you use it as a standalone A/D converter via S/PDIF?
