App Wireless iPad control of CueMix for MOTU audio interfaces

Wi-Fi control of MOTU studio mixing is here

The CueMix mixer in MOTU audio interfaces can be controlled from an iPad using an app called TouchOSC. Users can perform all CueMix mixing functions using on-screen faders, knobs, and buttons in TouchOSC. Communication is bi-directional, so any changes made on the computer screen will also be reflected on the iPad.

Support for Mac OS X and Windows 7

iPad control of CueMix FX is supported on both Mac OS X and Windows 7/Vista.

How it works

The CueMix FX (or CueMix DSP) mixer in MOTU audio interface hardware is controlled by the CueMix FX software running on a computer. The CueMix FX software is, in turn, controlled by TouchOSC running on an iPad, which communicates wirelessly with the computer.

Open Sound Control (OSC) is a protocol for communication among computers, sound synthesizers, and other multimedia devices that is optimized for modern networking technology. TouchOSC, developed by hexler.net, is a customizable OSC and MIDI control surface app for the iPad. Available through the Apple App Store, it allows users to control applications on a Mac or PC over Wi-Fi.

MOTU has created custom TouchOSC iPad layouts for controlling CueMix FX. When loaded into TouchOSC, an iPad becomes a customized Wi-Fi control surface for CueMix FX.

The TouchOSC layouts, along with a required CueMix FX software update, are included in a new MOTU universal audio installer now available to all MOTU audio interface users as a free download here.

Supported MOTU audio interface models

The new CueMix FX Wi-Fi features support new and legacy MOTU interface models alike, including:
β€’ Any β€œmk3” MOTU audio interface
β€’ Any β€œmkII” MOTU audio interface (including the 896HD, UltraLite, and Traveler)
β€’ 4pre
β€’ Audio Express
β€’ MicroBook
β€’ MicroBook II
β€’ PCI-424 core systems<
β€’ Track16

Cool! Nice to see another manufacturer using OSC for this (RME being one other). I can report from the field that this kind of interface actually works pretty well when doing live front of house work.

I've done high profile gigs and the system is very solid. It doesn't lose network connection unless you're a couple of walls away. I do however recommend that one uses a good WiFi router instead of an ad hoc network.

I also have a good experience with the TouchOSC running the MOTU. The only thing better would be skipping the CueMIx all-togeth, and have the OSC run the Interface directly! :-)

I only wish this system could be automated from Digital Performer.

The app is TouchOSC, and you download a layout for the motu from their site (the link to which is in the first post of this thread...)

Thank you for the help. I must say it is not really documented well at the MOTU site what you need to download. But not too hard if you everything!

I have been using the LP Touch app for logic and the MOTU app for iPhone for DP. I can't seem to easily control CueMix and these apps from the same iPad using Touch OSC. Maybe MOTU will create their own app for iPad for CueMix and make it easier. I was thinking about using CueMix instead if my current hardware mixer for monitor mixes ... Not sure I'm ready for the jump based on this app just yet, but for $5 it was worth the time to set it up.

Thanks again.
