AEA RPQ 2 Channel Preamp / EQ

I got to play with this at the AES show, and it made me think hmm...extremely high gain and can be used with any mic phantom powered or not...80dB of gain...probably as clean as the TRP...the perfect lo-cut and hi-boost EQ for gentle sculpting...me like!

I'll have more info soon when I receive them, they are starting to ship.

The RPQ with Curve Shaping and P48 power puts all the controls for ribbon mics at your fingertips: 80 dB of clean quiet JFET gain, P48 phantom power for active studio ribbons such as AEA’s A440, and LF trim and HF boost contols that are tuneable and defeatable so that you can tame proximity problems and/or add a little more to the top.

yes, this looks like a nice set of features. I wonder what it sounds like and how much it costs

someone should do something similar in 500 series..

Any idea when it will be available?

Maybe that is the idea. Kinda like those big Hot Pink / Purple contraptions.

List price is $1700,- and you should check with your local dealer for street pricing. A list of dealers can be found here or call us at AEA.

As mentioned earlier rackmounts are available. The LF filter is a low-cut shelving filter with 20dB of negative gain with continuously variable cutoff frequency (-3dB breakpoint) between 18Hz and 360Hz. It was specifically designed to tailor the bass tip-up (proximity effect) that occours when using ribbon mics close up or any unwanted low frequency noise.

The unit is shipping now.
Hope this helps!

80 dB of gain - and if it sounds like the TRP - absolutely rocks. I have some low output ribbons (shure 315 etc) that would sound killer with yer preamp, but never purchased the TRP since it lacked phantom (so I couldn't use it with all my condensers). So this definitely fits a specific need in the market.

Baby blue - if I bought this, I would probably front the expense into repainting the front. I seriously could never look at this piece for more than a second at a time. But others perhaps don't have quite such a visceral (negative) reaction to baby blue...

Your Ribbon microphones, do not give a flying expletive what color the box is.

They will thank you for not caring about the color in the rack tray for which the amplifier is built around.

maybe it's time for a mercenary edition of this box.

I'm kind of color sensitive, but I don't mind the blue too much. The unique feature set and probable killer sonics help offset caring about the looks for me. Did FF have his hand in this one?

Maybe they were aiming on getting the UNC Tarheel crowd behind them...I'm a Duke fan by osmosis though so my wife might not like the color choice either.

This looks like a fantastic piece of gear especially for those of us who have gone for the iron pres.

Hi Adam. It's not the same as the TRP according to the talks I had with Steve and Wes about it so, rather than speculate I figured I would go with a safe assumption and not say the word "is".

It's supposed to be very similar to the TRP with some changes. Slightly less gain available (only +80dB vs the TRP +83dB...haha)

Its a pity this doesn't have variable impedance ( I sound like a stuck record), I realize its probably optimized for ribbons, but I'm sure it would be nice to be able to tweak it a bit to taste.

All I have to say is that looks do matter (as demonstrated by certain comments within this thread), but I think the unit looks cool, and I like the choice of color. It may not have been my first choice, but it is far from unsightly.

So, 1 point for the "I like the color" camp thumbsup

okokokok - the color's fine. Has anyone actually heard one? I'm paricularly interested in the quality of the eq and any "vibe" the pre has.

So, we just got one of these up on the bench to have a listen before it goes in the studio.

First off, the picture in this thread is not a production model. I'll get a picture of the one we've got here. It's still blue (not a problem for me. Dim the studio lights if you don't like it), but the tone shaping section as well as the trim is different on the production model.

Build quality is awesome. Period.

Very, very difficult to overload. Even with a high-output condenser mic I could give it WAY too much gain before it clipped.

Next, I gave it my Coles 4040. I purchased this microphone because it has the inviting/sultry tone of a ribbon but with like, perfect top end...so I thought. Engaging the high shelf on the RPQ brought some extra magic fairy dust to the tone of the mic. Once I swept it past like 4-5kHz, it definitely got more highs...but didn't get "brighter". This most likely doesn't make sense to anyone outside of the few folks that have gotten a chance to turn this particular knob.

The low filter seems very smooth. Don't know for sure yet as I absolutely hate filtering out the beautiful low end in the 4040

So far...so good!

Julian,

I'm almost glad that you didn't that unit to Lisa and me - I am loving the TRP right now!
