gbSoundlab release TubeMU, the sweetest compressor

TubeMU is a vintage compressor that emulates the density and the RMS generated in this type of apparatus equipped with valves with a variable «MU» factor, in principle designed for radio frequency. This one in particular is called “Variable - Mu” and it means that the amplification gain is variable by polarizing the “grids of the first two triode valves” with negative voltage. The higher the amplified signal, by the internal side chain circuit, the higher the control voltage and therefore the greater the gain reduction. The uniformity of the signal is given because its control circuit is of the “Feedback Compressor” type and for this reason this type of machine has the distinctive musicality.

Plugin formats:
AU, VST, VST3 64-bit Mac OS 10.11, onwards.
VST, VST3 64-bit Windows 8.1, onwards.

The price is 25€.

You can listen to various audio demos on the website.

The audio compare option on your page is nice. The "audio b" is always a little bit louder, but that's okay.

Yes, you are right, I am a friend of equalizing volume, even so I think that in the demos you can appreciate what the compressor is doing in dynamics and tone.

Had a quick play with it. The graphics look kind of pixel-y, which is my only negative critique. First sound-impression is really nice. Not really sure what the sidechain freq does, or is it a typical HP filter?

Will test some more (although the demo restrictions are a little annoying).

I'm certainly curious about the demo restrictions.
But I like the sound

What does "rms stable" mean and how do vintage compressors "generate" rms? I thought rms was a math equation, lol.

Well, I've got way too many compressors/limiters but the "TUBEMU" is really one of the very best I have...
beautiful warm compression on vocals...

I am using it a lot since I bought it yesterday.

Don't be fooled by the view that the GUI is not beautiful, or the price is low. This is a high quality plugin that competes with big brands.

Demoing this right now.

Demo silence thing is irritating but I can stand it because it sounds great!
I love how it brings out low level detail and sustain in sources!

Thumbs up

Nice rich sound on the acoustic guitar on the video on the site.

But I just had to pick up another gem from their site first.

Exactly what it does on the low end is what prompted me to try it and I love it.

Looks good , can’t wait to try it. One thing, Manley might object to the use of "Vari-Mu" as they copyrighted it........

I bought it, but I cannot install it (Mac High Sierra).

This weird program wants me to use DiscImageMounter. What is that? It involve an old version of Java script that my computer refuse.

This is the problem with small plugin developers, they use very odd (stupid) methods.

So what do I do now???

How does that sidechain knob really work? What does it do?

That is incorrect. Why would you want to scare new developers? The Manley trademark was abandoned 16 years ago if you bothered to look it up

Haha lol! That knob makes me so confused, and manual didn’t help much. Sure sounds great though!

It is a sidechain filter but acting x100, the frequency range is from 20hz to 20k.

there is a little trick to see the frequency and the input level, you have to double click here

Isn't it up to 2k? Either way, doesn't act like it to me. But no matter, all is good.

I think direct downloads for the website page can be problematic. I had to download from the link in the email they sent me before it would unzip correctly.

Is there a chance to get a more detailed user manual?

Things to consider for an update:

- oversampling settings;
- show hide numeric values per knob;
- GUI resizability or several options;
- capability to save and recall presets.

No, this control acts x100, that is, if you dial 2000, it really is 20000.
