In general though - there should be regular pop up reminding you to listen to reference tracks through VSX. I'd venture to say that the majority of people who didn't get on with them just didn't take the time to listen to reference tracks through them.
Exactly. I noticed that as well. But once I'm in that space, I generally stay in that space. I've found that listening to music passively is a trick that helps me get to that space. Otherwise I run the risk of being over-critical and the binaural "I'm in a room" effect changes to "hey this sounds kinda funny."
If I start to lose the binaural effect I might switch to HD-Linear for a while. Or better yet grab a coffee and take a break or something.
You're absolutely right about references. And honestly I even do this in my own room now. How I used to just sit down and just pull up a song and start mixing is beyond me.
One other thing that changed VSX from "cool toy" to "essential tool" for me was realizing that I need to take more breaks than I was giving myself. Even if Archon, NRG, and Howie's studio were next door to each other in real life I wouldn't be able to walk back and forth between the sweet spots in two seconds. Or out to my car for that matter. So if I'm gonna switch rooms I'll get up and walk around for a few minutes. Sit back down and listen to a song or two while I check my emails and the NBA scores or whatever.
