If anyone is looking for a case for your SRM-1, you can take the foam insert from the cardboard box and drop it right into an SKB i-Series 1309-6 utility case. The extra front-to-back depth of the SKB leaves just enough room for your 5-pin cable, and the length and height are perfect.

Stuck at home trying new things this weekend. I have a Roland JC120 amp that has true dry/wet stereo chorus on it, which sounds amazing in the room but is hard to capture when recording (at least without big phase problems in the lows). I put the SRM-1 about 50cm back from the grille, centered between the two speakers. The coincident/Blumlein configuration keeps the lows coherent, but the narrow pattern provides just as much stereo separation in the treble as a spaced pair close on the grille. Very dark presentation, but that's ok because this amp is very very bright.

Clip is three stereo tracks, all hard-panned L/R, no EQ or post-processing.

Chain:
EGC aluminum baritone guitar > OTA pedal compressor > Nemesis tape-style delay > 80s Roland JC120 w/ chorus on > SRM-1 > Apollo UAD Neve 1073 Unison preamps > Reaper

Pretty new and pretty amazing!

On Dr. Satchmo's gritty, sweet, wonderful demos the SRM-1's mid mojo magic simply slays me.

The combo of mojo, presence and tone pulled me into Satch's space or put his voice in my head (which is a nice change from the other voices in my head). Either way, this elegant mic pulls on my ears like few mic demos ever have.

JP, congrats on putting stereo mojo in a simple sleek cylinder that is my #1 summer 2020 must-buy. I wasn't looking to be Blumlein'd, but now I'm besotted.

Can this magic ribbon mic cross a couple oceans and continents with only minor mojo loss and record a pack of feral mandos in their native environ? Or should I just pack up the family and move to Bruges or Spa?

Keep in mind he has a good voice. So that kind of helps. But yes, I ship worldwide and they tend to travel and arrive without issues. Transit times can be LONG these days unless we use DHL or such, a couple of parcels were lost then found this year, to date, also one lost for which I sent a replacemant, but damaged mics are basically unheard of.

JP.... I notice there's no Lundahl option for the SRM-1..is that because the stock trafo you're using is close to the Lundahl linearity, or would a Lundahl change the character too much from the 'classic ribbon' sound you've aimed for in this mic ?

Any news on the mono version of the SRM-1 ?

It's a flatter sounding Xfo with a different turns ratio, the difference with a LL is so small that in Beta nobody could tell which was which. So I don't offer that option. I'm not even sure it would fit, actually - haven't checked!

Sounds very nice on grand piano.
Like someone is playing the instrument in the room.
Just buy one, or two.

Hi flober1970.
I will send you a link when we finish the track.

I have some vintage RCA,AEA,Russion,Chinese, tube ribbons etc.The SRM-1 is a no brainer purchase.
It is not a flattering retro ribbon sound, that would be my RCA 44BX.Best mic ever..with a Pultec.

I will say placement on piano takes some experimenting.Inches equal miles.

I'm hyping the NoHype..jpgerard knows his stuff
(The Fetheads are worth grabbing as well)

Thank you Blueflag, you seam to have real experience with ribbons !

I am recording an old Steinway O using a pair of om1 and i am happy with it but I really like the sound of blumlein and ribbons and i might pick up one of those.

Looking forward to hearing your recordings.

Hey,
Much appreciated if someone can answer few questions before I order SRM-1 .

I assume that stereo mic is in Blumlein stereo configuration?

Did anyone had chance to compare NoHype Audio Stereo ribbon mics with other boutique ribbon mics manufactures?
I own stereo pair of Bash Audio RM BIV 1, if SRM-1 as good then I'm in.

Cheers

Testning SRM1

https://on.soundcloud.com/XZWYd

Recorded around a Nohype SRM1 in an acoustically controlled room. Vocal, archtop guitar and BD+SD stompboxes (direct) in first take, dobro, ABG, harmony and fake keys panned by room placement. Slight eq and compression added. Really like it! You can go very close to SRM-1 without hipassing.

We recently tested the Nohype Audio SRM-1 on guitar and vocals next to a Coles 4038 and a Beyerdynamic M 160.
The three mics are of course, very different from each other, but we were curious.
Using a stereo ribbon mic offers many advantages to separate the guitar from the vocal

Here's a mic tip about it:

In this comparison, you can hear all three mics in full length:

Here's a quicker comparison, you can hear the mics side by side on one take:

Hey, thanks! The setup was very simple. All mics went directly into the preamps of the RME UFX, just to make sure that it's the same pre for every mic. No Post FX except adjusting the volume. ;-)
