API Announces New 529 Stereo Compressor

API is pleased to announce their latest 500 series module, the 529 Stereo Compressor. Based on the unprecedented success of the 2500, the 529 takes many of the features and controls from API's famous stereo compressor and puts them into the first dual slot 500 series module from API. Carefully designed to deliver a wide range of compression options, the 529 delivers warmth, clarity and punch, whether used for subtle adjustments or heavy compression effects.

The new 529 compressor features API's patented THRUST® circuitry for a punchy low end, along with an Old/New switch that lets you choose between classic and modern compression characteristics: Old for vintage-style feedback compression and New for today's more common feed-forward compression. The Auto-makeup Gain button allows for ratio and threshold adjustment without affecting the output level.

Using API's discrete op-amps and transformer technology, the 529 provides the legendary analog sound of API. Like all API products, the 529 features API's unique 5 year warranty. The 529 has an introductory price of $2,195 and units will be available for shipping in mid-February. More information is available on the 529 web page: API: 529 Stereo Compressor

feature wise, the only difference between the 529 and the 2500 seems to be the LINK, FILTER SHAPE, VU SOURCE and the VARIABLE RELEASE section.
correct?

i'm really interested in hearing comparisons of these two compressors.

very interested to test this...anyone who heard this side by side to a 2500?

I have the chance to grab a 2500 for a good price, shall I get this instead?

As the 2500 is more spread out, larger meters and additional features I would go with that over the 529. If you have a lunchbox with 2 slots open, the 529 makes sense over a new 2500 to save some money and rack space

thanks! I think it´ll be the 2500 then....anyone who heard them actually side by side? do they have a comparable sound?

They should sound the same.

I am encouraged by the 529 as the 527 functions are a little limiting compared to the 2500. With the extra room with a 2 space 500 series, they wisely added some additional features that the 527 lacked.

Someone knows how 529 and 2500 compares headroom-wise?

As tracking/mixing compressor I'm sure it doesn't matter for me whether I would go 529 or 2500, but as I'm also doing mastering it would for sure be nice if the 529 could do the job as good as 2500 (minus the missing features of course).

the 529 is basically a 2500. there are minor differences, but i am getting the 529 just for 2 bus work.

It's a lot better than using two 527's for 2 bus.

Headroom for both is +26dBu

API Engineering has put together a little chart as a feature comparison.

I just got mine in yesterday!! Sounds Fantastic..exactly how i imagined. I only slapped it on a drum buss so far and WOAH .super nice punchy sound..auto gain is killer..
I'm about to run a mix through it and see how it does.
So far so good!! I'm in love.

Cool looking unit. 2500 has 4 vca's per channel where it seems 529 only has one per channel. I can't pretend to know the sonic difference, but can anyone else speak on this? ..just a more discrete sound in the 2500?

The API 529 appears to only have 1x 2520, 1x 2510, and 1x Transformer?

API 527 has 2x 2520 each?

Can someone clarify the number of each?

The 529 weighs 2.4 lbs and 2x527s would be 3.5 lbs?

Thanks,

Looks like 529 has one transformer and one DOA per channel. 2500 has the same, while the 527 has two DOAs.

The 529 and 527 use SMT components which are physically smaller than those in the 2500, but should electronically perform the same.

In an SSL quad compressor they use four VCAs primarily for better noise performance and lower distortion, however most clones use less since the newer versions of the chips perform better anyway. This may be what’s happening with the 529 design, but I can’t actually see how many VCAs are used from the pics. I believe the 2500 uses the same type of VCA as an SSL quad compressor, but only three per channel.

Hey Explorer - Thanks for the post, sound like you are speculating like me on the 529, but I don't think it has two transformers at all...Check out this video from NAMM last year... YouTube

Some more info here:

Review: API Audio 529 Stereo Compressor - Mixonline

529 = 2 VCAs per channel
2500 (pre 2005) = 4 VCAs per channel
2500 (after 2005) = 3 VCAs per channel (apparently API claimed this has better performance)
