The gain change element is a VCA, not a FET, for a bunch of reasons, primarily heat. FET's are very temperature sensitive. We developed this compressor for the 500 racks because you never know what is going to be next to it, maybe a tube mic pre.
The reasons that VCA compressors get a bad rap is because they are poorly designed, or at least not designed to behave the way the most popular compressors do.
Most VCA compressors are feed forward, ours is feedback.
Most have RMS detectors, ours has a peak detector.
VCAβs do not have voltage output. They have current and use and amplifier the same way that summing is done in console busses. Most use an internal ic amp. We use an all discrete transistor amplifier to convert current to voltage.
