wow....that's cool and all...but 2000?!?!? come on now...is anyone seriously considering actually doing that?
I think the cheap way is one of those M-Audio digital recorders which run on Microdrives, which I think are getting up there in capacity. Still $500, but also works as a recorder. Digital out is standard.
This is the reason I am building a Mac Mini into my car, rather than just using an ipod adapter.
My head unit has digital input and decent converters, much better than the ipod..
Xenarc touchscreen takes care of the input side of things.
You have to be insane to spend anything over 15 dollars to listen to crappy mp3 compression. Don't people know what quality is anymore?
When will people learn that iPods can play .wav files at just about any bit rate and sample rate? They are actually capable of much higher audio quality than any fixed media.... so long as you're using good converters.

Should be finished in a week or so.
do you you use something besides standard OSX as the GUI?

And if you use "Apple Lossless" you get almost twice the capacity at the exact same quality (Really, like FLAC apple lossless is just a very well designed lossless compressor, winzip/stuffit for audio files if you will).
