Feedback on this choir recording
1 Attachment(s)
Hi, all!

Recorded a choir (amateurs) yesterday. Had prepared my blumlein set up the day in advance (two Neumann sdc) and made a sound check. Everything was fine, but when we started recording a lot of strange "plonking" noises appeared. Thought first it was a cable issue, but couldn't work it out. Had to switch and replaced it with 143s (wide carded) in Nos. Omni outriggers and omni spots (3) on the choir. A bit of Inspirata reverb.

What do you think? Would love to get a second opinion.

I hear noises toward the end of the piece, in the chanting section. These noises have reverberation on them, which would suggest they are being recorded by the microphone.
However, you have reverb on the recording.
If there is reverberaion on noises on the original take, prior to the addition of reverb, the likelyhood is that the noises were in the room and recorded.

Yes, there is noise here. It was just a quick mix of one of the takes. They did 8. The conductor will pick a main take and I will patch in the best moments from the others. Then I will remove the noise.

Is the balance OK? The choir is not quite up to the demands of the piece and this makes it a little bit tougher to create a nice sound.

Lack of focus and a little distortion @ 1.30 m ish
Otherwise atmospheric and accurate.

Thanks for replying.
Yes, would have been much better focused with the blumlein pair. Will look out for distortion.
