RIP Steven Sondheim

We lost Steven Sondheim this month.
A prolific composer and lyricist for the musical theater. He also composed music for movies.
West Side Story and Gypsy were two of his early works that he wrote the lyrics for.

He was a unique talent and great teacher and mentor to the following generations of musical theater composers.

As you can see, my avatar is Sondheim with Goddard Lieberson in the studio during the Anyone Can Whistle session (and has been for 15 years :) )

A shout out to some great records:

Company - Produced by Thomas Z. Shephard. Also see the companion D.A. Pennbaker documentary on the making of this record.

Anyone Can Whistle - Angela Lansbury's first Broadway show and a fabulous score, beautifully captured, also produced by Shepard.

Sunday in the Park With George - I find this to be weird sonically but the music and orchestrations are superb and make up for it.

Also, in the early aughts, Nonesuch did two great records to preserve "lost" Sondheim works. The Frogs / Evening Primrose and Saturday Night.

Thanks to folks who were committed to preserving his work on record even when the shows were not commercial hits.

He really was the last surviving link to the golden age of Broadway.

RIP, to the master.
