Middle part of 3 lines is garbled . . . do you record it all, or just try to cut in the middle section?

Can you steal it from another take? If not, do all three lines.

No the middle line really needs to be redone, i'm wondering if it's wise to not go for all 3 as opposed to trying to match the one ADR sandwiched inbetween two production lines.

ADR all 3 lines, then try to just use the part you need. If you need to use it all, you have it, or if you need to cut in or out somewhere other than where you were planning to, you have your options open.

Cheers!

ADR EVERYTHING!!!!!!, well you could ADR only the three lines, but you could end up like this: ****ty quality line dialog, ****ty quality line dialog, SQLD, Studio pristine quality dialog, back to SQLD... you know what i mean, at least ADR the entire scene.

Jim,
It's a lot easier to have the lines recorded and use only what you need vs needing what you don't have!

Let me say it again:
It's a lot easier to have the lines recorded and use only what you need vs needing what you don't have!

It is better to record all (3) lines and use what you need then to need all 3 lines and only have recorded the middle one.
Now do you get it?

Listen to Marti, he really knows what he says.
The key is to preserve the production sound, because in most cases it brings much better performance, than adr. But if it comes to adr, having a couple of lines before the problematic line and after this line recorded is almost a must - you never know, if the timbre of actor's voice has changed becase of health condition, morning-evening thing, winter-summer, etc. etc., not to mention micing techniques, quality of the room and preamps. So if the only line is really needed, you may end up with the only line adred and this is your aim. But what if matching adr with prod dialog is impossible (because of reasons I wrote before)? It really happens and it is not so easy to judge this during the recording - it usually takes place AFTER the recording. I would record the whole scene and decide which dialog to use afterwards.

Regards,
Kuba

Yo, that's what I do, yo. I would cover all the lines but cut in only the words or phrases I absolutely needed. In fact I'm so good, I sometimes only use the inhales from ADR..............

Just to chime in and tip the scales on the vote,

please, for the love of all that you love, get all three! Heck, get another two on either side (slight sarcasm). Protect yourself!

Just got baaaaaaaaaagggggggged (BAGGED! Totally HOSED!) on a recent project where the only line recorded was the add line between two pieces of location dialogue from the same character. "they" didn't get the line before, nor the line after---- now the add line and the following line were both OFF CAMERA. Two takes of only the add line. Thanks very much. Thank you.

And you can imagine the disappointment from the producer and director when the line seemed to stand out. Location sound was recorded in a cabin in a 2-shot with the character's head down as he's eating, hunched over his bowl, both arms on the table. ADR.....was not. Nor was it really delivered "in character".

So, when you have the power to do so: get everything you can. Use it or not, in the end. Even the word or part of word that you might need.

But C.Y.A. Like they say before a boxing match "protect yourself at all times"

Good luck to us all.

In my best Keanu Reeves impression........Wooooooooooo

Seriously though, listen to Marti. When in doubt grab a whole sentence so that you have options.

I was responding to the minister. You see I was one upping his joke. See, in that way I was "putting a capper" on his funny comment. See he was making a joke by boasting he only needed the ADR for the breaths, and I was going one further by saying I didn't even need that, I just used the room tone from the session. Thats where the ....God, I need to get a life......

I don't type very fast, maybe my timing was off......

No worries. I "got" it. I, too, was making a (sad but true) joke.
Timing off? Naw, you're just working at 29.97 instead of 23.976 badum-psh!

carry on!
