What exactly does the Distressor do..

What exactly does the Distressor do that other compressors don't?

I see a lot of pictures where everybody seems to have at least one, so there must be something.

It is basically very versatile digitally controlled analogue compressor plus cool distortion generator, and it sort of does do what some of the classic compressors do.

A Distressor will adapt to nearly anything you need, if you know how to use it properly. It will not necessarily beat out specialty compressors at their game, but it sure can come close in many instances, as well as adding its own aggressive signature to the mix - I use mine quite often.
