First Mixer For Newbie Home Recordings (Electronic Music, Guitar, Voice)

I'm just starting to get into the world of music and currently have a Moog synth, a Korg synth, and a drum machine.

Would the Allen & Heath Zed-18 be overkill for me?

Mostly I'd be using it for the synths and drum machine, but I might want to hook up a Mic and electric guitar as well. I can't imagine needing more hookups than that.

Soundwise, is the Zed-18 the best within this price range (MSRP $599, but found one for $500 new), or would the Soundcraft M12 or some other mixer that I might not know of be worth getting instead of the Zed?

Also, would I need that much of a mixer or would a smaller one like the Zed-14 be more than enough as well?

Any advice and tips would be great. Thanks!

A+H will treat you well... I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work swimmingly for your application.

An interface with a few mic/pre amp inputs and some separate line inputs will do the job.

Using a mixer will require that it has USB or firewire computer connectivity to record. Some USB mixers only record the stereo 2 track output and are not multitrack capable.
You have to read the manuals.
