I need help with my New Home Studio Setup

Hi guys,

I'm in the midst of setting up a home recording in my room.

I basically record all song vocals, and usually go down to a proper studio to get it mixed because right now i haven't really got a monitor speakers.

This is what i'm currently using.

* Acer Laptop
[Processor Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU T4400 @ 2.20GHz, 2200 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s)]

* Audio Technica AT2020 Mic (XLR - not USB)
* Mic Stand & Pop Filter
* Headphones
* M Audio Fast Track
* XLR cable for the mic connection to the M Audio Fast Track
* Adobe Audition CS6

Please help me out & let me know if it's ok,
or if i need anything more.

Thank you!

So... Your only recording vocals? I would throw a hardware compressor in your chain to help keep everything nice and level, but that's about it. A good inexpensive one would be the FMR RNC 1773. Happy tracking!

I'd go for better headphones, but other than that you'll be fine with that setup for starters. I say you don't need a compressor - record clean and leave plenty of headroom and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the info.

So if i get the hardware compressor,
how do i use it? How do i set it up and how do i plug it into my current setup as shown in the picture.

Hey Elf,
Thanks!

Plenty of headroom, meaning?

I mean keep your recording levels low enough that there's no chance whatsoever of overload/distortion. Peaks of -6dBFS are more than enough.
