What are your must-have, go-to VI's/sample libraries -- orch, drums, synths, etc?

I've currently trying to move into more compositional work on top of the production/engineering stuff, and I need to make some major purchases on the VI/samples front, so I'm wondering what you folks find essential to your work flow. What can you not live or work without?

I do not have a stylistic/genre focus, so I am looking for maximum versatility of applications -- everything from orchestral/cinematic, to electronica/ambient, grungy garage... Everything a real deal commercial composer would need to deal with.

At this point, I'm leaning towards Komplete9 ultimate and Omnisphere, and it seems like between these two I have most of my bases covered, at least enough for a great starting point. Beyond that I could haggle over whether this or that external string library or amp modeler etc are arguably better than the bundled ones, but I can cross those bridges when I come to them. Am I missing anything? Are there any serious deficiencies in these programs I should be prepared to supplement?

Thanks all!

Omnisphere, Albion 1, Komplete 9.

Logic has a bunch of great stuff bundled with it.

The LePou amp sims are free plugins and way better than a lot of the stuff you pay for IMO.

Valhalla reverbs are cheap, CPU efficient and useful.

Thanks for the input! Do you feel the Albion samples are significantly better than those in Komplete, i.e., would you feel hampered if you had to use the NI orch libraries?

I don't actually own Komplete, just Kontakt. But Albion 1 is great to put things together fairly quickly.

You mentioned commercials and that's the sort of thing you want to be able to do quickly. The Spitfire stuff sounds great.

In my opinion, yes, the Albion library is significantly better than the Kontakt factory orchestral library which you get with Komplete. When I got interested in doing some orchestral stuff I played around with the Kontakt Factory stuff for a bit, but when it came time to make a full track that I would want on my reel and to submit to libraries, etc... I felt I needed a better orchestral Library and I got Alibon I, very happy with that decision. It really does sound awesome and as Amber mentioned lets you work quickly.

I'd say get Komplete alone to begin, that's a great starting point, explore and play around with it for a bit, then decide which areas you feel are lacking and move on piece by piece from there - likely you'll find you'll want a better orchestral library if you're going to do that style of music - and Albion is a good choice.

Great suggestions so far.

Omnisphere for pads, textures, from icy to warm, effects, hits and impacts, choirs, analog synths of all kinds, bass (the best Trillian patches come bundled), synth bass, synth pads, textured pianos and mallets.

Stupid easy interface, insanely flexible and fun to create your own patches, etc.
I've had it for 2 years and still come across inspiring sounds I never heard before.

Alchemy is also a fantastic one for textures and more; complements Omnisphere like the double-creme Brie you savor with your Bordeaux.

Albion from Spitfire, Symphobia from Project Sam.
Any of these 2 - or both - should pretty much nail the orchestral stuff.
Add a few 8Dio libraries for more specialized libs (violins, brass and woodwinds, etc), and you're really golden.
True Strike for more of those "In A World..." big badass thunderous drums.

VSL sounds awesome, but not for the faint hearted.
You need to know you $hit when it comes to general orchestration, layers, harmonies, articulation, etc, or you'll train wreck quickly.

NI Komplete for your bread-and-butter-just-about-anything sounds, grab that one too.
You'll need Kontakt anyway to run most of hundreds of decent libraries out there.

A few Arturia synths can also do wonders, like the Mini V, the ARP and SEM.
Spark is excellent for vintage drum machines.

Commercials, television, films and trailers, you should be good with these.

Of course, check out their websites to hear before you buy.

007 I am absolutely loving the Symphobia and Albion recommendations - especially those Spitfire percussion samples.

8dio has some insane stuff! That 1928 Steinway is to unbelievable!

I feel like this one of those threads that should be stickied.

Symphobia 1&2
Lumina (which I guess is symphobia 3, but the title keeps switching back and forth on the manual)
Battery 3
And Omnisphere

I try to stick with live instruments as much as possible so I don't lose myself to pointing and clicking a mouse to make music, but there are just some sounds you can't really make with a college students budget.

Edit: Almost forgot Kontakt 5.

Aren't the orchestral elements in Komplete from VSL? I had a friend that had Komplete 7(?), and I though I remember those being from VSL. Maybe they were a lite version or something.

I don't do much orchestral work, but the pocketblakus is a free solo cello, and it sounds pretty good. Google pocketblakus and Vi control, a link should pop up.

Hey Desire Inspires, that list was posted by MichaelL. If you are going to "lift" from another web site how about giving credit where it's due.
