Massive discrepancy on BMI vs ASCAP
I had a song a few years back that got placed on a commercial that was broadcast, nationally.
After a few quarters my friend said he was doing super well (he was shocked, as the backend isn't usually great). We compared and I had maybe $2k and he had about $20k. I'm BMI, he's ASCAP.
I did a lot of digging, had to go onto MediaRadar, turns out the publisher of the music house I worked with didn't add all the adcodes to BMI (but did on ASCAP lol).
They told me it would take a statement to catch up, I said cool, and next statement comes around and it's decent but my friend in the meantime got a ton more. Ended up emailing with the publisher and they contacted BMI, it took six months, they got me another couple grand.
I check in with my friend, and turns out we weren't looking at the right page on ASCAP. Turns out he had $64k so far!! At this point I'm maybe $22k over three years.
The publisher (Sony) says they can't do anything more, and that I need to contact my BMI representative. I never got one of those, so the only people I can contact are the commercial jingle department via email, who take months to respond.
Any hope here? How in the world could it be that different between the two PROs??
