Can someone recommend a good free tape plugin sim?

Hey guys I demoed the UAD Ampex. Fell in love. However it's 350 dollars. I just can't see spending that for a tape plugin. Anything free that sounds good?

If you mean UA's Ampex yeah it is very good,so is the Studer.
I always wait for UA to have a sale.
UA has great sales a few times a year and I always wait to buy during their better sales.
If you wait a bit ,especially after the plugs been out for a while and they have a good sale you'll save some serious $$.
Slates VTM is also very good and if you wait for a sale you will find it reasonably priced.
I have others like the KMT from Waves and Nomads MPX both of which I never use,the UA and Slate IMO are the best and worth paying for a bit more for.

Sure, although I'm only just getting into it myself haha.

You can blend the DRIVE and WARP parameters to simulate the saturation and wobble, etc.

Using a mode with two tapes is best for emulating old tape delays and/or units

It's a weird plugin yet incredibly powerful... I'm trying to make heads and tails of the info found here:
ValhallaUberMod: The TAPS Parameters – The Halls of Valhalla

The developer does mention that tape saturation is very possible and there is a preset for it...but I've heard that it can do amazing things

TB Reelbus, very cheap and incredible sounding. Massey TapeHead as well, and Variety Of Sound TesslaPro. TapeHead and Tessla are not as flexible as Reelbus and can't preform dramatic spectrum alterations. However, they work great and unlike Reelbus are low on CPU (Reelbus is a bit of a hog)

TB Reelbus I just heard for the first time a few weeks ago and now I know why it's a favorite for the price.

Slate VTM is GREAT and you can get a terrific deal on it right now at AudioDeluxe.com. It's iLok2, which has been a disaster for me, but I'd get VTM in a heartbeat if I hadn't had so much trouble with that thing, and had more faith in PACE as a whole (their website doesn't even work properly, I sometimes wonder what those folks actually look like, heh). Slate VTM sounds awesome, and can't be compared to the free stuff (although some of the free stuff can be more effectively used as an effect as such).

For only $149 you can get the Harrison Mixbus 2, which gives you saturation on all 8 busses and the main fader. It also gets you EQ and compression on ever channel and you can use most plug-ins with it as well.

I've been throughly impressed with the sound of my mixes using this for mixdown. I simply use a different daw for editing/recording.

Avoid using the Pace website with Firefox and you should be OK,it works in Safari for Macs and IE for PC.
VTM is a very good Tape emu plugin.
