Nope, because Decap contains multiple algos.

Yes Devil-Loc is a Shure Level loc emulation. No idea what Decapitator is think it's meant to be an overdriven console amp.

My fave saturations are.

Decapitator
Radiator
Virtual Tape machines.
Devil-loc Deluxe is great for Bass and drums.

These guys are pure class. I dl'd there free m/s cleansweep and it got me hooked. Even their BOOM! plugin for bass sounds is really effective on the meatiness on kick drum. Hmm there running pretty good discounts at the moment, might have to buy after a demo of course - cheers

There is no best.

Distortion is best stacked subtly imo.

Tbh, I can't think of a bad distortion/saturtion plug in.

Notable ones imo, are BX Sat, Decapitator, NLS, CamelPhat, D16 Devastator, Maul, Voxegeno LF Punch.

tse bod is an epic win: TSE AUDIO - Software
free, sansamp clone.
Then decapitator is fantastic for bass. Bx_saturator is also a multi-knife tool (I like it on snare for example!). Waves maxxbass is also good to add harmonics to bass freqs. Waves Kramer Tape is also good for me.

May not be the best place to ask, but when duplicating the bass track and using distortion on one, is it as simple as balancing the levels to get the sound/volume you want or do you need to do more (EQ, compression etc separate to what was already on the original track to get them to sit right together)?

My new favorite is Duende X-Saturator. I prefer it greatly to even Decapitator and the UAD Culture Vulture.

Gonna check out the Dada Life jawn soon. I love Saturn for utilitarian purposes but I'm actually disappointed with it's "sound." I use it mostly with the envelope generator to make drum and bass sounds have a edgier attack, but for sustained harmonics it almost makes me miss URS Saturation enough to get my bloody iLok replaced.

Studio Devil - Virtual Bass Amp.
IMO, the best sounding plugin for bass.

Otherwise, some Decapitator, Saturn, Decimort or just Logic's bitcrusher or distortions.

Interesting thread. These plugins however just warm up the bass a little but say if you wanted something for just
distortion that really transforms bass into something completely different (with extreme crunchiness)..for example something like this (0:36)....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fzr2Nv8NTEE

..then what would you use?

this bass sound can be done with picking the right sound of synth and adding some Decapitator or Saturn. both of these plugins can do extreme distortions too but maybe more dedicated extreme distortion manglers would be iZotope Trash 2 and Ohmforce Ohmicide.

I faced that problem recently. My Bassline just didn't cut through the mix - especially on smaller speakers.
Tried different distorsion & saturation plugins - none of them delivered what i was aiming for.
I then tried to add a synth that plays the exact bassline (via audio2midi) in the same register or an octave higher.
Blended that with my original recording and that finally did it!

edit:
to actually answer the question :
My choices would be saturn&kush pusher

Thanks, I forgot about Trash. Used it 4 years ago for guitar and found it little lackluster so maybe on synth it works better.

Gone through most of the Guitar Rig/Ramfire presets and that sounds great on guitar but not so good on synth/bass. Still cant find a present in GR that crunches bass like in that Kpop track without overdoing it.

Holy crap! Trash2 is the answer. Ran a distorted Massive bass through it "Buzz me" and found that same sound within seconds with one of the aggressive presets (and a few others). It really does transform it by crunching and at the same time gives it presence. Goes from something background to right in your face. Brilliant!

has anyone compared the TSE BOD to the Sansamp hardware unit?

Looking for a plugin for Logic that will get me the Tchad Blake Sansamp sound on bass (also on kick and snare).

I own the sansamp RBI which is the rack mount version of the pedal version. The plugin sounds pretty good but I have a lot more options on the RBI because of the mid parameter. Seems like I can get a little more character out of the hardware but maybe I'm leaning toward it because it actually costs money :p

Either way, I usually do a blend of sansamp for distortion, di for clarity and studio devil for amp boom.

Never happy with just the sound of the sansamp.

Since I work on Pro Tools I've become quite fond of the A.I.R. plugins they have. The Distortion is good when you want simple tweakability with a blend knob (the DC bias knob enhances second harmonics which is perfect for the bass). The AIR Vintage filter has a "fat" knob which'll saturate the filtered signal.

If I want to transform a DI bass into a synth bass, first I'll use the Vintage Filter set fairly low (<200 Hz) with some Fanes added to it, then distort it with the Distortion.

I also use the AIR Lo-Fi a lot. Sometimes only to reduce the bit depth to <2 to create that buzzing distortion.

Softube just released the free Saturation Knob for all platforms. Don't need to buy Focusing EQ anymore

Also, SSL X-Saturator and Sonnox Inflator are top choices for me.

I agree with the SSL Saturator. Nothing like it.

Also try the Boz +10db compressor. Raise the input and slightly have the compressor on as well (Like on 1:1 - it still is compressing extremely lightly)
This thing is just amazing!
