Best to demo everything
DAWS should be selected for workflow AND content-You get more for your money that way!

Check out Studio One Free, OP, and take as loooong as you want, because it won't die in 30 days, or *ever*, AND you can save your work and export it!

Watch this space....
reaper and midi work just fine

however reaper needs some serious tweaking to be 'midi centric'

if i could do midi in one reaper session and record in another reaper session, reaper could do a poor mans ableton

it would be best if ableton would just do a bit more in the midi out dept

Pro Tools. By FAR. If you are going to learn one DAW inside and out, it should be this one. Just about everywhere you go, it will be accessible to you. It's used in just about every major studio in the world. The stock plugins are excellent and so are the virtual instruments. The workflow is super intuitive and it's so efficient. Everything is laid out great. It comes with a pretty big library of loops as well. Highly recommend it. Also if you happen to be a teacher or student (or know someone who is), you can get an academic copy (same exact software, just reduced price) for I think $250 (correct me if I'm wrong) with 4 complimentary upgrades.

Logic is such a great deal now. I also hear great things about Reaper from those who have used it.
