What drivers do USB DACs use? And what about latency??

Been checking out some USB DACs. Some like the Benchmark state that no drivers are required. Others seem to use some type of driver, but there is never a mention of ASIO. So I presume (in Windows), drivers will be Direct X or MME. This also implies that latency will not be great. Anyone know the deal here?

I'm looking for a decent DAC to use for some editing on-the-go. I dont want to buy an interface as I'll be paying for multiple I/O and preamps etc. which are just unnecessary. For a given price point, I'd rather have all the expenses concentrated in the D/A.

Any advice?

Anything that is "Class Compliant" will not need drivers. They will be recognized as Core Audio on a Mac or WDM for Windows. You would need drivers for ASIO.
