Cubase problem

My new computer has arrived and I have started to install software on it. I seem to have stumbled on the first hurdle now.

Just installed cubase 5, and testing its onboard VSTi's to see if it's working. It does work, but I get these annoying crackling sounds when I play them. I've just created a single midi track with one bar of notes, so performance shouldn't be an issue. It also skips notes like nothing I've ever experienced before.

The problem does not occur when I use the the Microsoft GS Wavetable to play a simple piano sound, but it does occur on all the onboard VSTi's cubase delivers.

Any ideas on how to solve this ?

The PC shouldn't have trouble with it, it's an i5 with 4gb of ram, and I restarted after the installation.

1. Is this a genuine, dongled copy of Cubase?

2. What audio interface are you using?

3. What ASIO driver do you have selected in Cubase?

Thanks, it was the ASIO driver screwing me over.
