Macbook - Use as a PC for now? or...

For Portability and power I'm gonna upgrade to a Macbook 2ghz.
I currently use Tracktion, Altiverb and Waves Ren on very tired G4.
SO...
Scenario 1. -
Use the Macbook as a PC with Bootcamp and XP
Use the Windows version of these apps
for an Interface Id be using either a fireface or Apogee.

Or...

Scenario 2 -
Use the Macbook as a Mac
and Get Protools Mpowered
substitute Altiverb for TL Space
and find a Compatible EQ plugin
Use either Fireface or Apogee with an MAudio
firewire interface.

2. Seems simplest even though I love the punk rock no pretense attitude of Tracktion
and altiverb is lovely. Haven't heard TL but I need a great reverb...
I know in a couple months??? This argument will be mute but I need to mix
my record Now and the G4's not cutting it.

Help!!!!
Thanks,
Jacob

Got a Macbook myself. Installed an XP partition on it the first day. Been weighing very similar options to yours. I'd like to add Traction 2 because I've got a Mackie SDR and it opens the project files directly. It'll have to go on the XP partition for now, which is fine, I'm running Reaper there at the moment.
For an interface, the Apogee Ensemble will be Mac only which limits it's appeal to me in a dual boot enviroment. RME wins here (and it's shipping.)
I'm also looking at PT LE/ M-audio as it's the only compatible dual boot application at the moment. The RME would work as a stand-alone converter via adat to an M-Audio or Digi interface, while the Ensemble won't allow analog input to adat output direct patching. RME wins here again (and I was excited about the Ensemble until comparing it flexibilty-wise to the RME.)
I haven't decided if I'll go PT LE/ M-powered or Logic on the Mac side, but the Fireface 800 (or 400) looks like the best fit for my Macbook at the moment.

Windows on a Macbook

Hey subspace - Thanks for sharing your time on this.
Yeah, It's cool and confusing time for this stuff. We're so inbetween, on the verge
of really cool things tech wise but in some ways I feel forced into certain options
if I want to make a move now.
I agree I think RME is prob the best option all around in our present condition.
I've heard good realy good things. The 400 looks perfect but im not sure if it actually out yet????
It dosent seem like too many people are using Macbooks as serious windows machines
for audio...Am I wrong???
As much as I'd like to stick with Tracktion and all the Windows
compatible Plugs, I think I would still be more comfortable working in OSX.
But thats just me.
But on the OSX front at the Moment it's either Protools or Logic.
I'm leaning towards M powered but I really hate the idea of being locked
into an interface when with any other software I could simply use RME or
Apogee and be good to go.

Any more thoughts.

Would love to hear from people using Macbook as a PC and there observations.

cheers,
jacob

i haven't made the macbook move yet, but i would go with logic and keep it movin. i'm thinking i'll stay with logic and get wavelab on the pc side to take it to the next level.. the only thing i hate is having to install plugs so many times.

I've been using a MacBook (1.8, 512) running Windows and Nuendo with a MOTU UltraLite for mobile recording since it was released. It has bluescreened on me twice, but never actually while recording. It was always during menial tasks like installing/uninstalling or something. Other than that it has run without a hiccup. I would love to run it in OSX, but no UB software that I've tried so far (Live, Logic) holds up to Nuendo for me yet. Maybe if Reaper gets an osx release. Plug ins arent an issue, since I only use a few and they all have osx releases/alternatives.

experiences using Windows on a Macbook???

As I understand you can use any and all windows compatible plugs
in Windows on a Macbook (just like a PC) right?
So one wouldnt have to wait for the Universal/intel releases right?
hmmm
Any other others with first hand stories for us???
Is this a realistic option for a mac person who
cant wait for the intel releases???

yes. you can use all windows plugins/software booted into XP....

but, I've found that I just end up wanting the UB versions more than running 2 OSes.

I went down to the local Mac place yesterday to check 'em out. They also sell Digi stuff so I was surprised that they didn't have PTLE installed with an 002 or M Powered Version on a Macbook... Pro or otherwise. They only had Bootcamp installed on a Mac Mini thing also...no Macbook. I played with it for a little while in XP mode just to see it work. I'm Nuendo guy on a PC but I also recently bought an 002 just to have a form of PT but I was thinking it would be cool to use the 002 on a Mac OS plus Nuendo in XP mode....therefore the Macbook. I'd need to find another interface for Nuendo because 002 kind of sucks with it. Of course they had a Fireface 800 they're looking to blow out so everthing's a mess right now because I don't need both. Too bad it has to be M-Powered...why not RME-Powered or LYNX-POWERED !!!

I was also at Comp USA earlier and the Apple Rep hanging out for the day said Bootcamp was not gonna be supported by Apple. I don't know if that's true or actually even means anything I'm just sayin'. He was hawking "Parallel". I like the idea of booting one or the other(at least for audio) more than having both going at the same time. That sounds like trouble.
