CD - DOA v TAO using Toast and Translator

Hi Folks
Edit: DAO not DOA

I've been looking at a few CD's in Toast and regardless of whether I look at Audio CD's or sample CD's, they all are seen in Toast as TAO.
in a single session type mode.

so I tried Translator and made a S3000 format CD using it's own CD imaging system, it uses some system to create a variant old DOS format CD. Those old samplers were not fully compliant with DOS in order to save memory.

then I tried Toast 8 on OSX 10.4.11 with some data files.
I made a DAO selection for both a data DVD / a ISO9660 Data CD and a Mac/PC hybrid CD with DAO also selected.

when I load them and inspect them in Toast again, the DVD reads out as DAO Disk-at once
but any of the CDs read as a single session TAO Track-at once using the same Data as content.

has anyone ever been able to make a CD DAO which reads as DAO on inspection. is it not possible to make a DAO CD ?

Thanks for any insight.

np.

it's a disk burning mode. disk-at-once (or) track-at-once.

Yes, I know. I was just being - unhelpful.

I wonder, though, what do you need it for. Storage? I'm trying to imagine an application that would be useful.

I use DAO for my Audio CD burning. DAO enables disk info (e.g. song title and artist) to be written on the disk.

I didn't know there were options for a data disk.

well I have been trying to investigate what disk-at-once is usually used for and
I believe that one of them is supposed to be redbook Audio. where you burn an
Audio CD in a mode where it plays continually with no gaps.

is one application. but it's hard to get clear information as I think the
book standards actually come in real book form. e.g. it's a red book
that you have to get to understand the standard.

I've tried googling disk-at-once and track-at-once and redbook etc, and haven't
really got anywhere. I did find an application made by someone which is different
to Toast, and I was able to get it to work.

but I got the same readout when I burned the CD as a DAO and then inspected it
in toast again. it said Single Session TAO.

so I can't figure out why both applications end up burning as TAO when
I select for DAO in the settings. I'm wondering if it's a limitation in the OS,
the burning Hardware or a combination of both.

it's very confusing and hard to find anything out about. :/

interesting. I've seen threads here where people burn an Audio CD and ask
why this information doesn't come up when they load their CD.

then some people suggest that the information should be loaded into an online database.
maybe this is a change in some later protocols so that people (have) to always
enter information in some kind of central database ? for applications like iTunes etc.

I was able to make a data DVD which shows up as being DAO but just not the CD.
and the purchased Audio CD's I have also read in Toast as being TAO.
The DVD was a -R.
