Manually Mapping Impulse in Cubase 6.5

Hi guys,

I'm using a Novation Impulse 49 without Automap. I didn't take to the latter - mainly because it randomly omitted plug-ins which were enabled and which it could plainly 'see', and made things a bit messy by doubling up dll files.

So now I'm trying to manually map the Impulse controls myself, and plug-in wise it's all quite self-explanatory and I'd say I'll manage. However I'm having a lot of trouble getting the Impulse's transport buttons to work in Cubase 6.5 - I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I have the transport buttons on the Impulse set to 'CC' rather than 'MMC', and from Rewind > Record the CC numbers are 112 > 117. First of all I tried using the Quick Controls in the Device Setup menu to map the Impulse transport buttons to the respective Cubase functions. Had no joy.

Had a look around and found this video and followed it, adding the Impulse as a Generic Remote, but couldn't get the midi learn working.

Anyone else out there face similar problems before? Any help would be well and truly appreciated...

Thanks.

Hi David,

Please have a look at the solution below as it explains how to set up Cubase Generic Remote and Quick Controls. If you have further questions regarding this please contact us through the Novation Support Forum.

For controlling plug-ins you can use 'Quick Controls':
1) Click on the Devices Menu and select 'Device Setup...'
2) Select 'Quick Controls' under 'Remote Devices'
3) The Quick Controls dialogue will appear to the left. Select 'Impulse Impulse' (or similar) as the MIDI Input device from the drop down menu.
4) You now need to connect the Impulse hardware controls to the eight quick controls. A good choice is to use the encoders as your quick controls. Tick the 'Learn' box. Press the 'MIDI' button next to the encoders.
5) Click on 'QuickControl 1' in the control name column. Move the first Impulse encoder. Repeat this for the other seven encoders
6) Click 'OK'
7) Create a track in Cubase. Click on the 'Quick Controls' section on the left hand side. There are eight slot which you can be used to map parameters relating to the channel to each of your eight quick controls. If a plug-in is inserted on the track, it's parameters will be available to quick controls.

For controlling the mixer you can set up a 'Generic Remote':
1) Create eight audio tracks
2) Click on the Devices Menu and select 'Device Setup...'
3) Click on the '+' button in the top left hand corner and select 'Generic Remote'
4) The Generic Remote dialogue will appear to the left. Select 'Impulse Impulse' (or similar) as the MIDI Input device from the drop down menu.
5) There are two tables here. The top is used for learning the hardware controls. The bottom table is used to configure the parameters the hardware controls will be assigned to
6) Tick the 'Learn' box. Press the MIDI button next to the Impulse faders
7) Click on 'Fader 1' in the 'Control Name' column of the top table. Move Impulse fader 1. Repeat this procedure for the other 8 faders.
8) In the lower table for each of the eight faders set the 'Device' to VST mixer then in 'Channel/Category' select Audio 01 - Audio 08 accordingly
