Audio merging problem in Logic 5

I've been using Logic for just over a year and have recently started having an extremely frustrating problem. For the last few months I have been experiencing huge delays and crashes when trying to merge audio objects in Logic 5. It takes so long on larger amounts of objects (50-250) that it would almost be quicker to do a real time bounce. Often it just crashes the computer.
As an experiment, I set up a brand new song, recorded one audio file on a freshly de-fragged 10 gig partition on my H.D. Chopped it into about 100 pieces, put a couple in different places, with cross-fades, and tried to merge them. Same problem. I did it a few times. Sometimes the computer crashed, others it took anywhere from 3 to 5 minutes. The processing bar leaps about a third forward and then freezes. Sometimes it slowly dribbles along after that, occasionally having to fill up twice. Other times it just crashes.
I'm not sure exactly when this first started, and I can't remember if it started before or after upgrading to Logic 5.
Has anybody out there had similar problems and managed to cure it?
Anybody got any suggestions or ideas?
I've tried re-newing the Logic Preferences, de-Fragging the hard-drive, zapping the P Ram, rebuilding the desktop, giving more ram to Logic (it's currently allotted 450 mb!), and throwing my Strat across the room. Still no joy.
I'm running Logic 5 on a 533 dual processor G4 with 896 mb ram. 110 gigs of H.D in 10 gig partitions. Motu 2408 mk 2 soundcard. All clocked to Apogee Rosetta.

As new major versions of softwares come out sometimes 'bug fix' releases trickle out fairly rapidly soon afterwards untill it's settled in. I wonder if there is a Logic v 5.1 (or .2 or .3) out by now?

My mistake. Should have mentioned that I'm running 5.2 already! And actually looking back, I'm pretty sure it started happening when I was using 4.8!
Good call though.

Have you tried going to the support pages at emagic? They are pretty comprehensive nowadays...may be your only chance. You can also leave your problem there or call up the Sound Technology helpline.

I have not managed to re-create any of your problems.

Anyway, who gave you permission to chop up my crummy keyboard playing anyways?
