Sonic quality of EQ plugins

After reading the threads about GML and Massive Passive
and API EQs over in hardware land, I have to wonder:

are there substantial differences in the sonic quality of
EQ plugins?

I'm currenting running Sonar, had Vegas, and have
CoolEdit, all of which have EQ. Plus
lots of vendors sell EQ plugins. I've never
looked hard at them before, because I had
some that were bundled with the DAW software.

Are there strong differences in sound quality?
If so, who has great sounding plugins that
are "reasonably priced"? And of course,
what is "reasonably priced?"

Is there a EQ that I should plan on buying instead
of that $600 microphone that is on my lust list?

Plug-ins are no different from hardware in the sense that there will be huge differences between different models and brands. In software this could manifest itself in (among others):

•timbral differences
•ease of use/style of interface
•how much DSP per instantiation
•orientation towards specific applications
•amount of latency
•features
•presets
•automation parameters
•price

The proof would be would be to see how hard it is to get the same sonic results from any two similar products from different manufacturers. It's not easy!

It is easy to see that there are lots of plug-ins for
sale. I am looking for recommendations and citations
for sonic differences, and why they are worth the money
over the several sets of EQ plugins that I already have
bought.

Seems to me that if folks can say "a GML is great for this"
and "APIs are wonderful for that" then we should
be able to say similar stuff about plugins.

www.digitalfishphones.com plug's are impressive, free and well worth checking out.

You might want to check the Charles Dye guest mod archives, most of the plug-in's were Pro Tools based but there are companies doing cross over plug's like Waves, who are pretty popular. I'm not experienced with Waves EQ.

There are major differences in the EQ plug's whether you call it quality or taste.

My fave digital EQ is the Sony Oxford EQ with GML.

I recently got the Massive Passive it's a different world again.

I had very bad exp with Vegas built in EQ in my beginings ;-), EQ in nuendo is grainy and flat sounding, but way better then VegasEQ. Some EQs are just awful, some plugs are OK. Waves are OK, but nothing I'd kill for ;-). I like their LinEQ and UAD EQs.

They look interesting, but I don't see an EQ in their kit.
I'm specifically looking for EQs

DigitalFishPhones at least has a cool name :-)

I use this stuff for samples a lot:

http://www.nomadfactory.com/

they have a few eq vst plugs I think. There's an exciter/warmer type processing built into each plug. Very useful for getting sparkle and other buzzwords.

Not at all clean.

The UAD-1 Cambridge is an excellent EQ, by any standards, IMO.

nomadfactory blue tubes seem not to work for me, when I saw screenshots it was like "wow, now my UAD is going to be almost worthless", but hearing and fiddling with it, I'd never recommend it. The only thing I liked was the delay, but PSP84 can do much more. The Pultec style eq (nomad one) was sounding pretty bad to me and in direct (but only fast) comparison with UAD Pultec it was like yuk... hands away. :-|
