Please talk me into OSX and PT 6.......

Ok, we've got both rigs up and running with a mix3 on each.
Comps are dual 867 with a gig of ram (main rig ) and a g4 400 with 700 something in the B room.

everything is solid with 5.1.1 on both machines. Dual scsi on the A rig and firewire and internal on the B rig.

we aren't huge on plugz. we own and use regularly:

waves gold
Line 6
amp farm
auto tune
Mcdsp
Lexiverb
sound replacer
Ionizer
TC Master x (and a few other TC things)
Lo fi
Rennisance stuff
Bomb Factory
drawmer
that's about it....
I think the updates of these plugs would be the biggest expense....but my question is two fold:
Is the improved functionality of OSX and PT6 (beat detective, file management etc.) worth the expense? What was the biggest improvement realized in work flow....Is it
really solid? How much Ram is needed as a minimum?

and

what is your absolute must have in terms of plug ins needed to do your work? I've thought about investing in the Sony eq and dynamics for example. Is there any other mission critical plugs for your work style? which ones and why?

thanks alot.
Oh yeah, we took our first session in 4+ months on monday.....thank god for positive cash flow

Well Lexiverb is dead at the Moment.. So if you use that a lot you are minus one already.

I do not know if Ionizer is released.
I do not know if all the TC stuff is out, I think masterx was only released as a 3 band for HD I do not know about OSX.

I would double and triple check that the plugins are out.

Digi upgrades are free and McDSP and Sony.
All else if I remmeber you have to pay for.

I'll try the same today .... another backup day and will definately push PT beyond possible imagination. Plan to create a 60 + maxed out dsp all tracks full of edits and x fades ... ProControl faders flying in all directions / bizar plugin automations ... you get the picture kind of 'real life situation' and see how it reacts ....

all that of course while importing 1500 audiofiles AND backing up with retrospect the same disks I play / record the audio on AT THE SAME TIME.

I'll be back

While you're doing that, I'll just 'imagine' your computer crashing to help.

Come on, you know you've been there. How many times have you 'thought' your computer into crashing??

I waited nearly two years of using OSX on a series of iMacs, dreading every moment of crawling over to that old beast running OS9 and PTs, till it finally came out.

It is fantastic. And for someone going from a 9600G3upgrade to a dualG4, the speed improvements and overall system capabilities are awesome.

Did I tell you I am having a lot of fun. Never mind being able at any moment to fire off an email, or post to a forum while bouncing a file, or any other number of simultaneous tasks.

BUT I will say, after those two years of never, ever crashing the iMac, it took about a week of PT6 to cause a kernel panic on my new dual867.

I sort of felt honored in a weird kind of way.

PTs has a way to go, but that didn't stop me from installing it on a Thursday and starting a tv show on the Friday without any hitches. I didn't even install OS9 on the new computer. My backup system is to take the cards and put them back in the 9600, heaven forbid.

Looking out for Mach5 at any moment to complete the transition. Got the Pitch'n'Time upgrad the other day, another fantastic improvement (if you can believe that plugin could get any better).

Unless you need some specific plugin and are waiting for that, I say move on young (wo)man.

I no longer answer tech support questions for legacy OS.

It was very pretty.

The screen whatever you're doing has a thin film (like a sheer curtain) that drops down over it and a box in about 5 languages comes up that says something like

"There is a problem and you must restart your computer."

The only way to do that is shut off the power as the keyboard is useless and even the power key on the computer wouldn't restart it.
I would have loved to take a screenshot but of course that was not an option.

It has happened twice with PT6/10.2.4 (not yet with 601/10.2.5), here is the panic.log

I just finished some rather astonishing tests at the studio. I took it to an extreme level of stability testing involving :

- 64 tracks session maxed out dsp + RTAS
- extremely weird automation of every imaginable parameter on all 64 tracks
- PT slaved to my 2inch 16 track sending SMPTE to the sync I/O
- Digibase performing tasks in the background
- heavy editing across the tracks with absurd crossfades etc etc ...
- retrospect in the background

I'll post more in a new thread when I get home and I transferred the evidence (pictures) from my cam to the mac later tonight

FWIW ... I did manage to crash the PT application ... well crash ... forced quit after looking at the rainbow coloured spinning ball for 2 minutes. And I got a couple of 6031 ... cpu overload warnings throughout the day too ...

more to come ...

It's those 6031s that are most bothersome for me. I took my PT HD rig for it's first major tracking date this week. Throughout the day I had 3 cpu errors (luckily, only one was when I was in record). Not many pro studios would survive if their tape machine blew a fuse and shut off 3 times a day with no warning.

Jim, it must feel great to be on a G4 after using a 9600!

did you try reformatting your adio drives with the Apple utility ?? that got rid of 6031's for me .... the ones mentioned in the post were real CPU overloads ... quite normal for what I was asking the computer to do (see new thread about PT stability)

Yes, I'm afraid I've done all the suggested things.

****28 is the "normal" CPU overload error for plugins. ****55 is the error for too much automation data, not -6031.

I don't want to come off like I'm ragging on PT6, it's a really cool system that's capable of great things. At the moment, being the tape machine on a high stakes session isn't one of them...... and that's what I'm hoping to use it for. The power and speed of the system is wonderful. All of the processing that you can do in the background alone is worth the upgrade for most people.

I'm sure you know that this is the bit of your kernel crash which is important

dependency: com.digidesign.iokit.DigiIO(6.0.1)@0x1e384000

Had to leave early to sleep to work...

Horrid deadlines

Btw, iokit things are drivers

and also, vendor names are always attached to these things

So, the apple driver crashed which the digi driver depended on. That's not to say it isn't a two way mismatch. Digi could blame apples driver for not sticking to the rules. And vice versa. Motu keep blaming apple for changing things.

All the numbers you have there are useful to Digi. Always email vendors this stuff. It's actually invaluable and shows the path to the crash. It's like a buffer before crash log. Kind of.

Current thought on the DUC is that removing the syncIO solves the problem. hmmmmm.....

New builds of os x have been very particular about ram. That doesn't mean your ram is bad. Lots of people have had this.
