New (or old) Mac recommendations..?

I've been running PT Mix++ 5.x on a 9600/350 for almost 5 years. I'm considering making the jump to PT 6 soon. Also I expect to need to be able to boot OS9 as well.

Are there any "preferred" macs these days? Do the "faster" ones earn their keep? Is anybody still using SCSI drives? Do the new cpu's sound better?

My experience w/ the 9600 has been great. I bought it just as Apple discontinued it, the price was falling and the G3's were wet behind the ears.

I'd rather not overbuy although it's fun to have the most wizbang available.

survey says....

thanks a bunch

The answer is yes and no.heh

Best Mac for your situation is the older mirrored drive 1.25 ghz(can run both OS9 and OSX).

The only problem it doesn't have the new Firewire 800 ports(something you want if you will dump SCSI).

To my ears it sounds better than a 9600(which I still keep around for emergencies). Bythe way i am running HD not Mixplus.

SCSI is still the pro standard. In a year that may change.

I had a 9600/3500 with PT for years, not a single problem with it.
Recently I switchted over to an new(old) dual 1.25ghz.
Loud as hell, so I deceided to order the fan kit. noiw the machine is as loud as my old 9600, but produces twice the heat.
I don't see a big speed difference with TDM.
Staying with mixplus for a while, don't know why I upgraded actually. .
I dumped my scssi disks and work with ATA and firewire. No problem running 40 tracks

I have a lot of error 2 and 3 now, still figuring out.
Again, never had a single problem with my oldie 9600
