My iMac did something really weird!! Virus?

This is too wierd.

I made a song is Logic Pro8 then bounced it and left the file name as "output 1-2"

Then loaded it into Waveburner, stuck a CDR into the iMac and burnt it as an audio CD.

All this worked OK and seemed normal, I then stuck the CD back into the iMac to test that it played OK and then it got really wierd.

No joking here, this is the truth .... I swear.

iTunes and the Finder reported the disc file as being called "Dyke Rap" and iTunes says it's by a band called Genital Circus. WTF!!

Where on earth did the iMac get those bloody names from, I've never had any CD's by those names - in fact I've never owned a Rap CD!

Now it get's even weider .... when I stick the same disc in a Windows machine the file is simply called "track 1"

So now check this (I swear every word is the truth) I copy the track from the CD into my Windows laptop then transfer it to my memory stick as a wav. called "track 1" I then stick the memory stick into the iMac and copy the file to the desktop where it appears as "track 1" (ok that's normal)
I then open Waveburner again and import the track from the desktop called "track 1" into Waveburner to make another NEW CDR.

...... I burn the new CDR and after the iMac has spat it out - re insert it to read it and low and behold the f**king track is called "Dyke Rap" again by Genital Circus

WTF WTF WTF .... spooky.

Does my iMac have a virus?

I have since deleted the whole song and all files off my iMac - and tried a different song in Logic Pro8, bounced it made a CDR in Waveburner and all is normal, no more wierd file names.

What the heck happend - it has freaked me out a bit.

THAT was damn funny.

No, it's no virus. If anything, the track layout of your CD must mirror CDDB's listing for "Dyke Rap", which is what iTunes uses to get it's information.

Too funny!

First of all: no, you do not have a virus.

In fact there are no real viruses for the Mac (only a handful of trojans which you need to manually install with your admin password).

Now for the explanation:

This is not an error. It is simply iTunes reading the CDDB (a database containing track references).

Your burned cd happens to be of the same length as that particular song. Unless you specify ISRC or report your song to the CDDB it won't change. If your new bounce has different length or other data that makes it different from "Dyke Rap", then it will change though.

EDIT: drycounty, beat me to it while posting

Right. OK phew - that's a big relief.

Which would explain why it has never happend before and after.

I can see the humour in this - I'm not used to programs being linked to CDDB databases - as my main mix rig is PC Cubase5.

I boughthe iMac to use Logic Pro8 as I love it for being creative - and the iMac has been great - but I'm only 3 months on OSX and it does seem to have mind of it's own.

My wife is stood behind me right now laughing her head off, I was really starting to think I was losing the plot.

Thanks for the answer.

I don't know about that, but now "genital circus" is going to replace the band name "bishop bash and the meat beaters" which is used in my band to describe any sh1te band that we play with...sheer genius!

It used to drive one of my clients crazy when audio CDs of his mixes that he would give to me "lost" their titles when I played them on my PCs. It took a lot of explaining to get him to realize that the names weren't on/in the CD's but rather were being identified from the recognition DB that iTunes uses. (Don't use it, myself.)

(Ever wonder what happens to all those one-off CDs we all burn and often name the tracks on? I know I have. Will the online song DBs someday simply crash from the weight of all those one-offs or are the DBs self-pruning, I wonder?)

Below is a probably worthwhile Mac security site. The Mac is still nowhere near the malware magnet that XP and older versions of Windows are (interestingly the very OS feature that has made Vista so much less vulnerable -- a user access control feature similiar to the Mac's admin-installation requirement -- is absolutely one of the least liked features of Vista -- longtime Windows users complain that they have to enter their login info every time they install a program -- and they don't like that! heh Win 7 may actually weaken that protection in order to keep users happy. ).

There's still not a lot to worry about -- at least as long as you don't DL pirated software, that seems to be the infection vector these days -- but the days when the Mac was simply untargeted are over. (Current threats included trojaned-up pirate versions of Photoshop CS4 and iWorks '09.)

The CDDB database is hilarious. I burned a couple rough mixes of a song one time and iTunes labeled them with Japanese characters.

There's a box to check before you burn... it's called "include cd-text". It will work in PC's too, and CD players that support CD-text (the vast majority). That way itunes will avoid consulting the database.

CD Text and CDDB aren't related though.
