OMG! New Mac Pro Specs are INSANE!

I just saw some preliminary specs on the MacPro and they are seriously crazy. This could be the most powerful desktop ever built. 16-Core!!!

Check it out at MacOSXRumors.

So far:
Core i7 Xeon Chips 2.8 - 3.2GHZ
8 or 16cores with new native HyperTransport (so your machine will see 16 or 32 cores).
DDR3 Triple Channel ram at 1333Mhz. Reports are saying these provide a 60% boost over previous ram in the Mac Pro.
Dual GPU SLI based on Nvidia Technology with 2 DoubleWide PCIx32 Slots.
Much lower power consumption which directly translates into a quieter machine (less cooling required, hence less fan noise, etc)

And last but definitely not least:
New Case

More news as it appears.

March is going to be an awesome month. Ive been waiting for this refresh for a while now. Need to retire my Dual g5 2.0.

talk amongst yourselves.

Glad I've held out this long. With that kind of machine, mixing in Logic is going to be a dream. More power than ever!

Smile New Mac Pro

Yep ! Sounds great !
The new i7 Xeons on the Intel server motherboard is gonna really push the performance to the next level.
The lower power consumption is not gonna be as low as expected though :-)
It's exciting, there are some great new instructions embedded in the i7 CPU, too bad that it will take a while for software developers to catch up and release updates for our DAW software to take advantage of them.
But still we can be excited for the bright future :-)

heh

Have a great day !

Wow I was just ready to order The H Xeon that is out now. Now wonder Apple called to ask about my saved order. They want me to buy their old goods. This is for March?

Any pics of this new case?

no pricing info yet, but there is some inference that can be done from the article.

...previous models had 12MB of L2 per chip but due to Nehalem improvements, new L2 actually performs better β€” and the reduced amount improves cost, manfacturing yields, power/heat dissipation, et cetera.
It looks like they are intentionally trying to keep the costs down. Im guessing that Apple wants the Mac Pro pricing to be where it is now (hopefully)

I hope this is all at least a little true. I was holding out, hoping to see new towers at Macworld earlier this month, and then rather disappointed - my 4-year-old G5 is getting a bit long in the tooth for 60-track mixes at 88.2.

I'll just keep freezing tracks until March...heh

Arghhhh....

Just bought a Mac Pro 8 core 3.2 a few weeks ago, along with a Mac Book Pro. This new machine sounds like a dream, however the 8 core 3.2 blows away the G5 dual 2.0 I've been using the last 4 years (its now my back-up) and handles all my needs with ease.

The new case is what really stings!!!

The i7 is a screamin' CPU core from Intel.

As a video person, I wish they'd get their Blu-Ray act together.

The Xeon is a server class chip ... very fast
i7 Xeons are not out yet but they represent a huge boost for multimedia and audio applications. Read the the Mac Pro VS i7 thread.
The I7 Xeons will also about 4 times the price

jeez...

i still can't bring the processor in my 2 dual core 2.6 from two years ago to its knees...

I'd personally rather have faster cheaper hard drives. That said, this is pretty cool. I probably won't need a new computer for 3-4 years, can't imagine what will be out then.

if you want a screamin IO subsystem check these out:
Newegg.com - Intel X25-M SSDSA2MH160G1C5 160GB SATA Internal Solid state disk (SSD) - Solid State Disks

Get 4 of those and RAID-0 them together, you will be stunned.
