If you can afford the disc space for 88 you can afford 96.
88 is based on superstition in today's world. (I.e., no software ever 'divides by two' to convert to 44.1)

88.2 has no reason to exist.
If you're pushing a UAD system hard, you can get a couple more plugin instances in 88.2 vs 96kHz before maxing out.

Why does 96 kHz have more reason to exist than 88.2 kHz? 88.2 is closer to the optimum of 60 kHz, less data?

People love to quote Lavry about "60k being probably optimal', but they love to leave OUT that he also said, given the choices available, he'd probably record at 96k

I agree. 48kHz/24b here, seems the most stable and usable overall. I've used 96k via ASIO but my motherboard's soundcard chipset doesn't support it, which means it's not an option for WAAPI, and that causes issues when anything else on my PC wants to play sound while Reaper is opening or running.

Ok. But what's the reasoning behind this?
What's the problem with 88.2?

All DVD players can play 96k but not 88.2.
