Latency settings

I HAVE A M-AUDIO Profire2626. I havea core 2 duo e6600 and 4 gig of ram but Im getting some anomolies when recording. My recent track sounds like smeared in a couple parts. I was told to set the latency low for tracking and high when mixing.

So is 256 good for tracking? Or go lower or higher? And for mixing what is a good starting point?

What do you mean by smeared? That doesn't sound like an issue related to latency.

256 for recording should be a good place to start.

Should I worry about changing the setting during mixing?
