Question DP3 compatible with M-Audio??

Hey, newbie to your forum.
I bought DP3 recently but I have no hardware right now that supports it. I am currently using PC, but I'm gradually adding Mac since thats where Logic and PT is. I was thinking of buying the M-Audio Audiophile 2496. My ultimate goal is to have a studio in which I can track music, but for right now I am just gonna stay with editing and tracking overdubs (nothing like a drum set) until I can afford to upgrade. I was thinking of buying a 24-bit digital pre-amp/compressor combo (like a dBx) with S/PDIF outs to the M-Audio S/PDIF ins. Is this a good idea, and does DP3 support this for real-time recording? Or instead of getting a preamp to go into my soundcard should I get a soundcard with mic pres and XLR connectors? I can't afford a 888/24 which I really want, not even second hand on eBay and I hear the D/A convertors on the motu 2408mk3 aren't as good as the converters on the 888/24 which I was going to get. Could someone help me out of my confusion? THanx.
