Computer mixing technics??

what are some of your technics for getting an "open sound" when you are mixing on a computer?

I typically find myself having large plug in chains always trying to compensate for the "openess" of analog....im never content with just getting things "balanced" - it always sounds too brittle.

As well as Monitors...
Good Mic pres(Colored) and AD/DA helps.
A tape sim plug or a Fatso/Hedd helps.
What does the orginal sound, sound like?
Also its the plugins used. Good plugins and fewer sound better to me, watch the gain staging between plugins...
Some plugins smear the audio more, better monitors will let you hear it better.
