Question motu 828 and audiodesk

Hello all,
Our band is currently looking into purchasing the motu 828 to do home recording. We're mostly a live band and would like to be able to capture that to hard drive. We've got numerous computers to choose from, a dual 1gig g4 for the home and a tibook 500 g4 for playing out. I've worked with protools before, I'm wondering the following:

How does audiodesk compare to protools (i'm not in love with protools, just asking about a comparison)

Is it better to get some good tube pre-amps for the mics to go along with the 828

We've got a 16 channel board, is it possible to run the mics through the board, and use the line outs from the board into the motu (is that idiotic, or is that the way it should be done etc...)

Are there other options in the same price range (under 1000) that give 8 tracks in that are better for what we're going to be doing (live recording as well as live home studio).

Is it possible to get something like an alesis ai3 to give you 16 tracks of input on the 828

I know that's a lot, I just don't like making stupid decisions. icon_smile.gif

Thanks in advance,
josh
