Maxed out (specs) 2016 Macbook Pro i7 2.9 Ghz Vs. maxed out iMac i7 4.0 Ghz - how big is the difference? I'm using Logic Pro X

The iMac will be able to handle significantly more plugins/tracks/etc. but the MBP is no slouch! It will handle relatively large projects. Just depends on your needs. If you are into large sample libraries (Kontakt, etc.) and multiple synths (Omnisphere) will lots of plugs on each channel and plugs on the master bus--all simultaneously...go for the iMac.
