Laptops and Firewire and bus power

Shortly after my laptop arrived the other day, I was faced with the painful realization that its 4pin firewire plug doesn't supply bus power to my Edirol FA-101 sound interface. I also tried a PCMCIA firewire card I had kicking around, but that didn't do the trick either. Part of why I got the laptop was to do recording away from an outlet, so I'm starting to think I bought the wrong one.

So, before I drop it in the mail... Is there any way to bus power a firewire peripheral on a laptop that lacks a 6pin plug? Is there any special firewire PCMCIA or Expresscard that can supply bus power?

Thanks!
