Depends on how much of an asshole you're trying to buy one from... but count on spending at least $5k for the honor of being told how lucky you are that you were allowed to buy one.

You could buy a serge dual vco panel $1800
quality costs.

Agreed on all 3

One of these days I'll cave and start looking for some 100 series modules. Been doing a good job of keeping my lust at bay with the 200e though

The 259 was basically my introduction to synthesis. An old family friend had an original 200 system when I was probably 8 or 9 years old, and I've been hooked ever since.

If only I knew where that guy was now so I could yell at him for the amount of time and money he has cost me since then

That's gotta be $20-$25k+

Awesome man!

I see you are in the research triangle. Is this for an institution
or is this a personal acquisition?

That gonna be amazing fun.

that is a thing of beauty.

but what most people don't realise is that it's only the size of a paperback book.

Disagree. For utility modules, Doepfer is just fine. I love my A140s, Mults and even my A131 VCA (although its a bit noisey). For things that make sounds though, look elsewhere.

i once emailed don to ask him why the box was so expensive. cost more than any other synth in my studio! never mind a whole system !! his response was great basically mass produced synths just aren't as special or inspired and you get what you pay for. he's a synth legend building space modules by hand that are far above and beyond anything, ever. . still, i think i'll stick with my laptop i make more money with it in non-music related work nowadays

The module prices are all posted on the Buchla website. Add a little for shipping and you'll get the right answer. I don't actually know the answer because I started with a 3-boat system and then upgraded. Don's policy, which is excellent, is to provide full price credit for modules you turn in against new purchases. I turned in my 3-boat module for a 4-boat and that saved me the trouble of listing it on Ebay--a great value to me!

The two that intrigue me the most are the Infinite Phase Shifter
and Frequency Shifter/Balanced Modulator.

I'm also intrigued by the Serge Soup Kitchen...

but I'm a processing/fx nut.

The 285e Freq Shifter/Balance Modulator is very much an instant gratification device. I haven't yet found the magic knowledge to unlock the wonderfulness of the 297 yet.

I can't justify the expense of a Buchla 200e but from personal flight time with a 200e and some 200 modulars I can attest that they are very different systems from anything else. Moogs and derivatives rely on the filter for shaping the sound. Buchla relies on their complex VCOs and processors for shaping the sound. Buchla is not renowned for their filters and this forces you to adapt. I'm a creative person and it didn't take me long to find my way around them. They're very flexible machines and the small footprint of the modular belies the power underneath.

Well, I don't know, but I have spoken with users who have both Doepger and Serge systems and guess what? they were SO pissed off by the quality of Doepfer that they wouldn't touch a Doepfer again. They told me that pots are crap, knobs are crap, quality is average (at the very best).

Support? Well, people have bought this Schaltwerk (whatever it's called) and they have been waiting for proper MIDI implementation for ages. Dopefer said they are working on it and users have been waiting for something like 8 years. Maybe they are *still* working on it.

Aesthetically-wise, I just don't like it. Some might do, though. I am cool.

Maybe things have changed at Doepfer.
I bought a large system in the 90's when they first came out.
I had absolutely zero issues with the build or sound quality.
I highly rate Analogue Systems too by the way, and there are so many other great modules offered by a variety of 'Euro' builders.
At the same time I owned Serge and later bought Buchla.
Apples and oranges workflow-wise - that's the main difference.
I decided I preferred banana systems to mini-jacks, so I sold all my Euro and bought a variety of banana based systems (Modcan, Serge, Buchla).

But you still have 2 Buchla filters heh

I'm curious...do you find the sequencer to be enough for
that large of a system?

I have 2 triple-morphing filters and 2 quad dynamics processors (that have the all-important cv-controlled high-pass filters). And several other modules have filtration as well, but the Ebbe und Flut is a whole 'nother thing.

I assume you mean bandpass filters, if you are talking about the 291e or lopass filters (292e).
there are no dedicated high-pass filters in Buchla 200e format.

You are right...I got it backward. It even says "lo-pass" right on the module. Doh!

I agree. I see these types of threads all over the place. And I must say, I also see them in praise of instruments also.

Often the strongest opinions on these various instruments, as well as their value, comes from people who have never used them, and in many cases know very little about them. And even when facts are presented to them, they ignore them. IMO, this is probably the worst thing about synth forums these days....
