Finally bought reaktor 6 last night

I gave in to my internal softslut and upgraded to R6.
I wanted to make some observations in case you are on the fence on this one.

Let me get this out of the way, it is as close as you can get to owning a 4k west coast system without paying that kind of money. Sound is great. Mono synth tones are just amazing. Take for example configuration called driver. The sound is just awesome.

For reference I have a i7 3.4 sandy bridge imac 2011 with 16mg of ram

pros
- slightly better interface
- blocks sound great and in complex patches you can get some huge sounding monosynth sounds
- IMHO competes with virus mono synths (that virus is able to do this as a poly is something to reckoned with)

Cons
- Huge CPU hit. Reaktor 6 does not have multicore support stand alone. One monosynth voice of driver wiped a core at 96khz. It was about 40% use on at 48khz.
- While interface is better, it is still cumbersome. The new directory root system is different which will frustrate many. You keep separate folders for reaktor 5 and 6 by default. Add that the original reaktor 5 user folders and new reaktor 6 user folders. Thats 4 locations to navigate
- Polyphony is not set from the get go. Understand that as that would be a massive CPU killer.

Super pluses
- Working with blocks and maschine is a joy. Integration is good and rapid processing makes it a dream
- User library. Need say more?

It does indeed sound lovely and very alive. I've been a huge Reaktor fan for ~10 years now and always kind of wanted a real modular. When I upgraded to 6 (like the day after it was announced) it absolutely destroyed 99% of my lust for a real modular system. I've got a couple nice mono synths for hands on tweaking. Also, between Reaktor, My E-MU Proteus 2000 series synths and a Virus TI, I can get super freaky with sound design, which is what modular is all about for me (if I were to build a real system).

Those blocks sure do bash on the CPU though. Not a big deal for the way I use it. I tend to print to audio quickly to help my workflow advance anyways.

Blocks did the opposite for me, it rekindled my interest in modular and has been a big help in designing a system that I can actually use in my workflow BEFORE I've actually invested any money into it.

That being said, Blocks has become a major feature of my productions lately. I love it.

Yep love it too, though I've found R5 to have a fantastic tone anyway, and synths like Monark quite easily matched and often beat my Little Phatty to the point it was sold. R6 sounds great and when they get the CPU down, it'll be more of a go to synth. I'm intrigued by the Softube Modular coming as it keeps the standard jack type interface, the two pane interface with blocks is not as intuitive frankly. But yes it's a great way to learn the esoteric function devices and such without the outlay. I'm excited to combine them with my real modular too, though I hope they don't squeeze out someone like Os at Expert Sleepers by bringing out an interface that undercuts his. Ideally they'll license his tech and give him loads of cash to make the Disting mk4!

Excited to see more blocks development. So far lots of fun. I do wish the interface was a touch more practical. Maybe reaktor 7

Hey fusion, I've been meaning to ask you for a while. Is there a bigger photo of that modular you have as your avatar? I'd love to see what you have in there and take a closer look at the case.

It needs a redo but the thing has grown into a proper synth so I feel wrong breaking it apart. It is affectionately referred to as the chemodan synth. But I want to move more west coast at the time.
It evolved from being additional LFOs, osc and what not to a proper monster of a voice synth. Sometimes I use it alone for basses. Sometimes I use it with elektron keys for another melodic line, etc

I'll post a pic tonight when I get home.

That's awesome. And you use a single uZeus to power the entire rack?

Bumped the Power supply to the best and cheap I could find.

I use this one. Per specificiations, should be way above 2amps

http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Adap...CQZ9N5ZAGT08AH

there is no noise issues, overheating or anything. The Rubicon for example tracks so accurately it is freaky

Started messing around with this ensemble (https://www.native-instruments.com/e...try/show/9525/) in the user library last night, using some samples of a female vocalist I've been working with. Absolutely killer, getting stuff I never would have gotten otherwise. Then I decided to duplicate the sampler block, add in some Monark filters and frequency shifters, patching in FM filter modulation...holy ****. I don't miss the Octatrack any more. Of course, now I'm low on sleep and thinking it might finally be time to jump into eurorack to build the sample mangler of my dreams...Reaktor 6 is a gateway drug.

This is the one you have plugged into the uZeus, right?

just wondering have any of you reaktor 6 users got uvi falcon also?
Do they compliment each other well or is there a lot of overlap?

I am trying to decide which one to get as I have only room in my brain for 1 of these beasts, love to hear your opinions

Lots to list but it it pretty obvious. 2 analog oscillators, 2 digital oscillators, several awesome filters, 2 envelopes, LFO/clockdivider/clock, etc

copy and paste link. Original pic is plenty big

That's a sweet looking modular!

I have Reaktor and although I've yet to learn to effectively use it, I know it's very powerful from the reviews and videos I've seen.

Saved ensembles are sortable by category. Every block (every module) becomes a page. So you can just jump from page to page and twist a knobs

Thanks again Fusionid. That Reaktor ensemble is quite fun. Although I've had Reaktor for a while, last night was the first time I was able to enjoy it. Something happened during installation and on the instruments menu it's mapped to the .pdf files that correspond to the instruments instead.

I just need to take some time and map the menu to the directory that corresponds to the actual instruments instead of their .pdf

Anyways I got a taste of what Reaktor can do.

Cheers!

I have both. They're pretty different. I find Reaktor blocks to be very fast and intuitive to work in. Falcon is a bit of a mess. I must admit I've avoided using Falcon as anything other than a preset machine with some basic tweaking because of this. I need to put aside some time to go though some tutorials With Reaktor I was up and running with no help at all.

If you're running Reaktor at 96 kHz you'll hear little aliasing, but Falcon will only run at your audio interface's sample rate so you'll hear it alias.

Falcon has gotten a few new features since it's release, but new Blocks and Ensembles get posted to the user library every day.

Falcon is polyphonic and can handle multi sample patches with ease. It sounds great.

I don't think it would be an issue for anyone to have Reaktor 6 and Falcon... At least not anyone who frequents this site.

truer words have never been typed! was it last month a gentleman was talking about selling his arp2600, and with all the conversation in the thread, ended up either buying a SECOND one or replacement modules for his first?

Us GS'rs definitely need a support group for our GAS....

What do you mean competes with Virus mono synths?

The tech in Reaktor already exceeds what is capable with the Virus. Just listen to Monark.

Anyone else really hoping NI comes out with a hardware option for integrating R6 with the outside world? If they came out with a device with half-decent CV and midi options to integrate with Reaktor 6 I'd be on it like a fat kid on a Twinkie. A standalone option (a la the Nord Modular) would be even better, but I wouldn't think twice about a middle ground option even if it was essentially an expensive dongle.

Reaktor is a bit daunting, but the more I'm digging into building my own ensembles or tweaking existing ones with Blocks I'm just blown away by what is possible. It's such an education in synthesis and really inspiring...makes me think we should recommend it to beginners first to really learn synthesis, instead of the more common response I see given to just start with a Brute/BSII/other common analog/subtractive synth and learn the basics. For $200 Reaktor 6 gives you access to a PhD level program in sound design and synthesis, but at the same time you can stay as basic as you like and never get bored between the factory ensembles and user library. It's really reigniting my interest in synthesis lately, to the point that I'm bringing my laptop into work so I can steal a few minutes patching things together when I have downtime.
