That was easy....

Custom built "250" : Equalizer based on the classic MEP250 parametric mastering EQ from way back, brought into the future with awesome mastering mods and stepped attenuators

Is it one of Igor's kits?

Ha ha!

I knew someone would go straight to the site!

Yeah it is based upon Igors design, it's by my main man Mark Watson. It arrives tommorow, I can't bloody wait.

These things sound awesome!
I've build an 8 channel version myself. 4 instead of 5 bands and no stepped switches, for the rest the same.
Does yours have discrete opamps in the output stage?

Errr... are you talking about the clone on prodigy-pro?
Or something different? Would you please point us to more information? You got me curious.

Hey it's based on the clone from Prodigy Pro by Igor (I believe)

I didn't actually build the thing so I don't know the details of how it differs from the schematics posted on Prodigy Pro, although I have found that thread before.

I'll get the full info and post ASAP!

Seems like a very decent build. If you can, post pictures from the gutz.

If you are willing to share an price tag (a range is sufficient) would be cool to know. I hope it sounds as good as it looks.

Let us know!

Ill see if I can get some more pics.

Slutty info:

- It has EQ in and out switches on each band
- It's stereo, but fixed in linked mode
- It has a 6 or 12 dB switch, so that's 6dB at 0.5 steps or 12 at 1dB steps
- All other controls are switched for maximum recall.
- It looks the same as my compressor, aka like a tank!

I am awaiting more info on this from the chap who built it, although really I'd like to just jump and get some signal running through it and get my head round how it reacts.

Yeah, once I take a pic of it with my compressor on top it will look like a monster mastering module!

I like the way the values go round in a circle like a crazy whirlpool

If anyone wants the guy who built it's email please PM me.

It's be second piece of outboard ever. I spent a long time studying EQ and Compression before even thinking about getting something outside the box, because I knew the limitations of poor hardware in this day and age.

I guess I grew up in the industry about the same time plug-ins got really good too.

My other box is a modified GSSL compressor built by the same chap. It's very similar design wise, bakerlite knobs and stuck on labels etc... I'll take a picture of them both later!

Some basic operating info:

Individual bypass switches:

Up
+/-11dB gain in 1dB steps (bands 1 to 4)
+/-5.5dB in 0.5dB steps (band 5 - hi-shelf)

Middle
Off

Down
+/-5.5dB gain in 0.5dB steps (bands 1 to 4)
+/-2.75dB in 0.25dB steps (band 5 - hi-shelf)

So band 5 has half the gain range of bands 1 to 4 just because I could think of no earthly reason why anyone would need a +/-12dB shelf in a mastering eq.

IN switch (top right)
Bypasses all channels for quick A/B testing.

Low Shelf
On the original, this only worked when the Q knob was turned all the way to the left and the pot switch was engaged. In your model, it can be used at any Q value giving some more sound shaping options (which may or may not be desirable, worth playing around with it).

Hi Shelf Slope Switch
Switches between 12dB/octave & 6dB/octave slope. This is a subtle change but still useful.

Q switches
Continuous rotary switches so you can go from Q=1 to Q=12 in 1 step.
I used 12 steps in the end as 24 would have been total overkill. 6 steps would have been more than adequate looking back.

IF YOU WANT ONE OR SOMETHING SIMILAR (as I have had loads of PMs!):

m.a.watson at hotmail.co.uk

He is happy to discuss new projects now.

Price? very very very good.

well i wish I had the patience to only buy the best when I was first starting out....I have had a lot of outboard that I was less than pleased with at the end of the day....

it's funny, after years of gear whoring, I have wound up back in the box...with only a few select pieces of outboard for processing

really a nice box you have there....

I'll let you know how it sounds when it actually works :(

EDIT: After thoughts this was damaged in transit, it was not, it was the dreaded "two broken yet brand new cables" test. What are the odds? Mark who built it was brilliant and came to my house and checked it, it was great to speak in more detail anyway, so it all worked out great in the end!

Cool! The sound of that EQ is killer, i know it is!
To bad it's damaged... DHL? i had some issues with DHL, since then i banned them.

I also have something like this heh

With Fred Forsell DOA 993's in the output and all stepped switches as well.
I used it for the first time today actually.

EDIT: Not damaged in transit, simple human error on my behalf if anything!

Luckily the guy who built it has agreed to jump on a train and see me.

Either way I am going to get my ears round the sound as much as I can tonight.

So far I'd call it silky, definitely vintage in character but incredibly ranged.

I think it;s best to open it up first now before powering it up again before you blow up some opamps.

It's all gone a bit haywire, it makes no sense as the chap who built it actually used it for his own use for a week or two and runs really extensive tests, he sounded absolutely mortified when I told him.

The plus side is I haven't paid for it yet so I am not out of pocket in the mean time which will mean I can sleep at night!

The packaging was actually very very good, better than we get equipment packaged at work, it must have been thrown about in a van or two or something.

Next time I'm renting a car and picking it up myself.
You should see the way the Parcelfarce driver handles the stuff we get sent to work. If it's at all heavy he'll just throw it around out of pissy spite. Anything really heavy almost always ends up damaged as the sorters/couriers express their dissatisfaction by treating it like crap.

I had a similar experince with DHL shipping my stuff from my home in Germany to my home in NC. I had, at the time my very nice workstation(I purchased this one from a retailer, Sequoia Digital)..

well, when the package arrived, the computer was in about 100 pieces. the strangest part about it was that one of my HDDs was taken apart and heavily damaged. there was a sticker inside(on the computer case) that said HANDLE WITH CARE-Fragile we packed at the shipping place.

UPDATE:

IT'S FINE.

What had happened? well, let's just say I didn't check one cable just due to accidental rushing around human error, this cable is about as top end as cables can be, and it was dud.

So the EQ is alive, well, working, sounding lush.

All the people who have been interested in this, do not worry, not only did Mark come over the next day to check it, he also took me through how each control works, and the compressor he built me before, and we talked about potential future projects.
