If you only had three plugins (no hw) to master...

what would it be - and why?
I choose: DMG Equilibrium, Multiplicity and Limitless.
Super sound and flexibility.

Just for fun and out of curiosity!
thanks and cheers!

I have mastered tons of albums with only an ITB dynamic EQ (Hofa IQ-EQ), a de-esser (DMG Essence) and a limiter (FabFilter Pro L2).

I’d have the Weiss DS-1, Sonnox Dynamic EQ and something that could saturate like TrackComp or VulfCompressor (or even the new Tupe from GoodHertz).

Between the DS-1 and the Sonnox I have pretty much everything needed (limiting, full band compression, eq, dynamic eq…) and the third plugin would be for when I need to actually add or impart something extra.

I'd go with the three I started with: Waves Q10, C1, L1.

We've come a ways since then haven't we?

Just checked out IQ-EQ, which I hadn't come across before - looks interesting. Could you tell us a bit about why you like it, Greg?

It would be an EQ plugin, a compressor plugin and a peak limiter plugin. It makes no difference how expensive the plugins IMHO, but if you don't really understand how to use these or lack expertise mastering music, all bets are off.

YMMV,

It does everything well. Great sounding EQ, fully functional dynamic section, all channel controls are always visible, very flexible. It’s my go-to ITB EQ.

Man I typically like to think of processors rather than plugins. I typically use dynamic EQ and a limiter in most sessions. The third could be any host of things that are needed to get the job done.

So I would probably go with FabFilter ProQ3 and ProL2, then maybe Ozone because it contains most of the other things I might typically need to use on a master.

It's possible to have only three plugins?

Clip gain, a clean EQ, and a clean limiter (Pro-L 2).

I could happily get all my work done with:

Multiplicity for EQ, dynamic EQ, broadband compression and de-essing.

Limitless for clipping, limiting and metering.

RX for de-clicking and general de-noising, etc.

If I could add one more it would be a dedicated de-esser like Essence (which is also very useful for low end management).

If only three, I’d have to go with a limiter, eq, and forgo the compressor for a LUFS meter. In my case, Fabfilter eq and limiter and the Youlean meter. The Fabfilter limiter could definitely be used as a compressor in a pinch. Maybe someday all daws would just provide a LUFS meter on the master fader?

Caveat: I don't mix or master other people's music, only my own! My profession is in composing, arranging, and session musician work, not "engineering" properly. That being said, I recently finished my first album where I did mix and master everything, and I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out. After mixing things (somewhat obsessively for months), I did a final dirty ITB "mastering" job on each track using just two plugins: Brainworx Masterdesk and Fuse Flywheel. For these tunes, I think it was plenty, but I'm sure a proper mastering engineer would have heard things I don't!

Here's the album for those curious.
