So many problems on a 2k unit... quality definitively got a cost.

A shame that SSL is going on this cheap route (even if i know they need to do it to survive).

FYI SSL determined the Vintage Drive is out of calibration so will get sent for adjustment once I can part with it.

This is going to be a long post, but thought it was worth sharing.

Here are snapshots of tests I did with my unit.

I used PluginDoctor sending a 0dB (+4dBu) delta signal to the Prism Lyra 2 which loops into the Fusion and back.

The analyser shows the stereo channels going slightly out of balance when at certain settings.

As already pointed out the Vintage Drive and the Input/Output Trim is what can cause the slight shift in stereo balance, which could add together and also be exaggerated with further processing.

The stereo balance hasn't been an issue for me, but it's good to know the settings that it starts to happen to avoid it becoming one.

Also worth mentioning that the balance change wasn't dependent on the level of the signal output from the DA (into the Fusion), but rather the position of the Trim or Drive dials.

My conclusion from the tests:

1. If wanting to trim input more than -3dB, then better to do in the DAW.
2. If wanting to trim output, then -2dB creates a slight shift less than 0.1dB, but -3dB or more is more balanced.
3. Vintage Drive settings between 5-8 Drive has the best stereo balance. The density setting didn't effect the balance.
4. It's really not that big a difference anyway but may as well avoid.

FWIW, I currently use my Fusion as a send and return loop with the Prism Lyra 2, and have the rest of the chain on the insert of the fusion. I've been using it since the start of the year and am really loving it. Super versatile & amazing sound.

SSL Fusion Input Trim

Input Trim 0dB

Input Trim -2dB

Input Trim -3dB

Input Trim -4dB (≈0.1dB difference)

Input Trim -6dB

Input Trim -8dB (≈0.2dB difference)

SSL Fusion Output Trim

Output Trim 0dB

Output Trim -2dB (< 0.1dB difference)

Output Trim -3dB

Output Trim -4dB

Output Trim -6dB

Output Trim -8dB

SSL Fusion Vintage Drive
I did this test with the signal attenuated 5dB before being sent to the DA, to avoid clipping the AD when Vintage Drive enabled.

Density 5 - Drive 1

Density 5, Drive 2

Density 5, Drive 3

Density 5, Drive 4

Density 5, Drive 5

Density 5, Drive 6

Density 5, Drive 7

Density 5, Drive 8

Density 5, Drive 9

Here is the Input & Output Trim + the Vintage Drive set to their imbalanced settings, to show how it can add up.

Input Trim -6, Vintage Drive 4 Density 5, Output Trim -2
(≈0.35dB difference)

Regarding +dB on the Trims, they did also have a similar shift in balance, but the opposite direction.

Let me know if any feedback on the tests or other thoughts (i.e upload a zip of images next time, instead of embed them )
